Position Summary
The Director of Field Operations is responsible for leading and elevating ICON Builders’ jobsite performance across all active construction projects. This role oversees General Superintendents, Superintendents, and Assistant Superintendents, ensuring every jobsite is safe, compliant, well-coordinated, and executed at ICON’s standards of quality and schedule performance.
As the senior field leader, the Director of Field Operations ensures all projects are proactively managed, risks are mitigated early, trades are coordinated effectively, and the field team is supported, trained, and held accountable. This position plays a critical role in strengthening ICON’s reputation for delivering occupied affordable housing renovations safely, efficiently, and with excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Oversight
- Manage and develop all General Superintendents, Senior Superintendents, Superintendents, and Assistant Superintendents across multiple states/projects.
- Conduct regular jobsite walks with field leaders to evaluate safety, schedule progress, trade performance, and quality.
- Ensure field teams follow ICON processes, protocols, checklists, and reporting expectations (daily logs, photos, safety documentation, delivery logs, etc.).
- Partner with the CCO and Project Management to ensure a seamless connection between office and field.
- Lead ongoing training and development programs for field leadership, focusing on safety, schedule management, communication, Procure usage and ICON standards.
Jobsite Performance & Execution
- Hold field teams accountable to construction schedules, manpower planning, and weekly look-aheads.
- Review site logistics plans, phasing plans, unit access and sequencing to ensure efficient execution, especially for occupied rehab projects.
- Ensure subcontractors are mobilized on time, staffed properly, and performing per contract requirements.
- Support resolution of jobsite issues related to coordination, quality, site conditions, delays, access, and resident impacts.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to ICON’s Safety Program, OSHA standards, and state/local safety regulations.
- Verify that toolbox talks, JHAs, incident reporting, OSHA logs, and safety inspections are completed and documented.
- Coach field personnel on safe operations and enforce corrective actions when needed.
- Ensure compliance with project-specific requirements (DIR, HUD requirements, QA/QC protocols, etc.) as applicable.
Quality Assurance & Controls
- Oversee quality control standards on all job sites.
- Ensure punch processes, mock-ups, material installation standards, and manufacturer requirements are followed.
- Partner with Project Management to address quality-related issues quickly and prevent repeat errors.
People Development
- Lead performance management, mentorship, and training of all field staff.
- Identify skill gaps and implement training programs (safety training, scheduling, leadership development).
- Build a strong bench of future Superintendents and General Superintendents.
- Promote a positive, accountable, and collaborative jobsite culture.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Work closely with Preconstruction on constructability, phasing, schedule planning, and field insights for new pursuits.
- Partner with Project Managers to maintain alignment between budget, schedule, procurement needs, and field execution.
- Coordinate with Operations and Compliance teams to ensure jobsite requirements and documentation are met.
- Support leadership on strategic planning for resource allocation and pipeline forecasting.
Reporting & Metrics
- Provide weekly field performance updates to the CCO.
- Track and report field metrics such as schedule progress, safety performance, labor utilization, subcontractor performance, quality trends, and staffing needs.
- Review and enhance standard operating procedures for field operations.
Skills & Qualifications
- 10 years construction experience, with at least 5 years in a senior field leadership role (General Superintendent, Regional Superintendent, or Director-level).
- Extensive experience in multifamily renovation; occupied rehab experience strongly preferred.
- Strong technical construction knowledge across major trades (MEP, structural, interiors).
- Ability to lead, mentor, and influence large field teams.
- Strong conflict resolution and risk management skills.
- Proficiency in Procore, Microsoft Suite, project scheduling tools, and daily reporting platforms.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and leadership skills.
- Willingness to travel regularly to project sites across multiple states.
