About Guideship

Guideship is a nonprofit workforce development organization dedicated to creating career pathways for underserved communities through mentorship, internships, apprenticeships, workforce readiness training, and cybersecurity education.

Over the past three years, our affiliated workforce development initiatives have invested more than $700,000 to develop and mature a nationally recognized Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program. The program has become one of Maryland's leading cybersecurity apprenticeship models, serving individuals from underserved communities and helping graduates launch careers in technology and cybersecurity.

We are now seeking experienced volunteer Board Members who can help Guideship scale its impact through fundraising, strategic partnerships, donor engagement, and nonprofit growth.

Description

Guideship seeks an experienced fundraising professional to serve as a Volunteer Fundraising Advisor & Internship Mentor. This individual will provide strategic guidance and mentorship to a Summer Fundraising & Nonprofit Development Intern while helping the organization establish foundational fundraising practices.

The advisor will not be responsible for executing fundraising activities directly but will coach, guide, and transfer knowledge to the intern and organizational leadership throughout the engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy & Planning

  • Review and provide guidance on the organization's fundraising strategy.
  • Help identify realistic fundraising opportunities and revenue targets.
  • Advise on donor cultivation, stewardship, and sponsorship development.
  • Recommend fundraising best practices and tools.

Intern Mentorship

  • Meet with the intern weekly to review progress and priorities.
  • Coach the intern on fundraising outreach, donor engagement, and event planning.
  • Provide constructive feedback on fundraising materials and presentations.
  • Share practical fundraising experiences and lessons learned.

Event Development

  • Advise the intern on planning and executing a fundraising event.
  • Review sponsorship packages and donor engagement plans.
  • Assist in developing event goals, timelines, and success metrics.
  • Attend the fundraising event when possible.

Capacity Building

  • Help establish repeatable fundraising processes.
  • Recommend potential advisory board members and community partners.
  • Provide guidance on grant prospecting and corporate sponsorship strategies.
  • Transfer fundraising knowledge to organizational leadership.

Desired Qualifications

  • Passion for workforce development, education, and creating opportunities for underserved populations.
  • Minimum 10 years of nonprofit fundraising, development, philanthropy, corporate giving, or grant management experience.
  • Demonstrated success in securing grants, sponsorships, major gifts, or fundraising event revenue.
  • Experience mentoring staff, interns, or volunteers.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Retired professionals are highly encouraged to apply.

By the conclusion of the 10-week engagement, the advisor will have helped the organization:

  • Develop a practical fundraising strategy.
  • Establish a donor and sponsorship pipeline.
  • Successfully coached the intern through the planning and execution of a fundraising event.
  • Build foundational fundraising knowledge within Guideship leadership.
  • Create processes that support long-term fundraising sustainability.

Your expertise will help create career opportunities, workforce training programs, mentorship initiatives, and educational pathways for underserved individuals while preparing the next generation of nonprofit leaders.

Recommended Mentor Expectations

Time Commitment

  • 5-10 hours per week
  • 10-week volunteer engagement
  • Mostly remote with occasional meetings
  • Attend the fundraising event

Ideal Candidate

  • Retired nonprofit executive, development director, foundation executive, corporate philanthropy leader, fundraising consultant, or nonprofit board member.
  • Proven experience raising $50,000 annually through grants, sponsorships, donor campaigns, or fundraising events.
  • Passion for workforce development, education, mentorship, and underserved communities.
  • Strong coaching and mentoring skills.
