Position Summary
The Vice President of Accounting will lead all accounting operations across a multi-entity national real estate portfolio. This executive will oversee corporate accounting, property-level accounting, consolidations, and financial controls. The VP will manage and mentor a high-performing accounting team while ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance across a complex ownership and legal entity structure.
This role requires a strategic yet hands-on leader with deep real estate accounting expertise, GAAP technical knowledge, and experience operating within a privately owned, entrepreneurial environment.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a multi-level accounting team (corporate accounting, AP/AR, and financial reporting).
- Establish clear performance expectations, KPIs, and succession planning strategies.
- Build scalable processes and infrastructure to support portfolio growth.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement with emphasis on use of technology
Financial Reporting & Consolidations
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes across multiple entities.
- Manage consolidated financial reporting across operating companies, property-level entities, and holding companies.
- Ensure timely and accurate internal financial statements for executive leadership.
- Prepare and review financial reporting packages for ownership, lenders, and joint venture partners.
- Oversee intercompany transactions and eliminations.
Technical Accounting & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Oversee implementation of new accounting standards.
- Manage external audits and coordinate with outside auditors.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls and risk mitigation processes.
Systems & Process Optimization
- Evaluate and improve accounting systems, ERP platforms, and reporting tools.
- Lead system integrations related to acquisitions or portfolio expansion.
- Implement automation and reporting enhancements where appropriate.
Strategic Partnership
- Partner with the CFO and executive leadership on strategic initiatives.
- Provide financial insights to support investment decisions.
- Support due diligence for acquisitions and capital events.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with asset management, development, and operations teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
- Certified Public Accountant.
- 15 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Minimum 10 years in senior leadership overseeing teams.
- Deep experience in real estate accounting (multi-entity, multi-asset).
- Strong background in consolidations and complex entity structures.
- Experience in a privately held real estate investment or operating company strongly preferred.
- Public accounting background (Big 4) is a plus.
- Proficiency in real estate accounting systems and ERP platforms (e.g., Yardi, MRI, JD Edwards, NetSuite, etc.).
