What are the responsibilities and job description for the Telephone Switchboard Operator – Salem VA Medical Center position at I-2-I Solutions, Inc.?
Key Responsibilities
- Provide switchboard coverage 8 hours per day (7:00 AM – 11:00 PM), including weekends and holidays.
- Answer all calls within three rings, in a professional and courteous manner.
- Direct calls to appropriate departments or personnel; provide general and patient information when authorized.
- Respond immediately to emergency calls and alerts, including Code Blue, Code White, fire alarms, and disaster notifications.
- Operate VA paging systems and maintain current on-call rosters using the VISTA system.
- Document all unusual incidents, emergencies, and system issues in the daily log; submit summary reports to management and VA COR.
- Safeguard VA property, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to federal and VA security and conduct policies.
- Maintain a clean, professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship (required for federal access).
- Ability to obtain a VA Low-Risk/NACI background investigation prior to start (VA-sponsored).
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing switchboard or telephone operator duties in a medical, government, or large institutional environment.
- Proficiency in using CISCO telephony systems, VISTA, and related call center software.
- Strong communication skills, fluent in English (spoken and written).
- Ability to handle stressful and emergency situations with professionalism and composure.
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, call logs, and web-based communication tools).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center or federal healthcare facility.
- Familiarity with HIPAA and federal privacy standards.
- Experience handling emergency dispatch or hospital paging systems.
- CPR certification or experience with medical codes is a plus.
Additional Requirements
- Must wear VA-issued identification badge while on duty.
- Must comply with VHA Directive 1085 – Smoke-Free Policy.
- Must be punctual, reliable, and capable of working assigned shifts including holidays.
- Participation in a brief transition/training period may be required prior to full operations start.
