HX5 is currently seeking a Stress and Fracture Engineer to join our team with NASA at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX. 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Stress and Fracture Engineer will:

  • Stress and Fracture Analyst to support structural integration tasks of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station
  • Coordinate stress and fracture tasks across multiple stakeholders across multiple NASA centers and International Partners
  • Review structure and fracture analysis reports
  • Verify structural and fracture control requirements are being satisfied given analysis and testing performed on the hardware.
  • Advise on test methods and levels, as required.
  • Use stress analysis experience to perform classical hand stress analysis, finite element stress analysis and fracture analysis.
  • Be familiar with NASA standards for analysis, including Fracture Control
  • Know and have experience with using NASGRO
  • Be proficient in the use of finite element modeling techniques using FEMAP or PATRAN for finite element model development and NASTRAN for finite element solutions.
  • Prepare structural analysis reports and work with other engineers to find resolutions to problems.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Education and Experience 
Must have one of the following combinations of education and experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering school and at least 5-10 years of relevant experience
  • Familiarity with desktop software applications, MS Office is required.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
     

Preferences:

  • Prior experience with NASA spaceflight hardware development
  • Prior experience with NASGRO
  • Familiarity with NASA Structural Requirements
  • Familiarity with NASA Fracture Control Requirements and Implementation


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position and offers a 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off).

Work Environment:

  • Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
  • Equipment and Machines - Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and
    adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). 
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Other Position Requirements: 

  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
