What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accountant and Controller Level Contractors position at Humm Accounting?
Accounting Contractor Partnership — Humm Accounting
Hey, accountants.
If you're good at what you do and looking for flexible, meaningful work with entrepreneurial clients — we might be worth a conversation.
Who We Are
Humm Accounting is a small, fast-growing, full-service accounting and tax firm in Fort Collins, CO. We work with entrepreneurial clients and believe that financial clarity can actually feel good — for clients and for the people doing the work. We're led by a CPA who has done the work himself and understands both the technical side and the entrepreneurial side of building something. His focus is on building the right team and giving them everything they need to do their best work.
We're intentional about how we grow — investing in automation, AI, and process development to create real efficiencies for our team and our clients. Things move fast here, and that's by design.
What We're Offering
This isn't a job in the traditional sense. It's a contractor partnership. We bring the clients; you bring the expertise. You set your own schedule, work how you want, and grow your workload at whatever pace makes sense for your life.
Here's how it works in practice: the month has a natural rhythm — the first two weeks are heavier with month-end close and financial reporting due by the 15th. The back half is lighter, which is a good time to manage relationships, get ahead on things, or just breathe. We start contractors with a couple of clients (we have some ready to go right now) and add more as you want them. Some of our contractors work with one client. Some work with 25. It's genuinely up to you.
We provide the client base, all software and systems access, and an admin and ops team behind you so you're not navigating everything alone. We start on an hourly basis and move toward a per-client revenue share model as the relationship matures — which rewards efficiency and gives you predictable income over time.
How the Work Is Structured
We are end-to-end, full-service accounting. That means our accountant and controller level contractors own the full scope of the books — from transaction coding and reconciliations through month-end close, accruals, financial statement preparation, payroll submissions, software integrations and reporting. This isn't a role where you hand off pieces to someone else. You're carrying the full accounting cycle for your clients, start to finish.
Every client gets a small team — usually one to four people depending on what they need. Contractors often fill different roles across different clients: more senior work for some, lighter support work for others. That flexibility is intentional. It keeps clients from overpaying for a higher level of service than they need, and it gives our contractors variety in their work. Compensation is tied to what kind of work is actually being done, and we have really clear, honest conversations about that with everyone on our team.
We're also actively building — developing automations, leveraging AI, and creating process documentation to make the work more efficient over time. The right person on our team doesn't just follow systems; they help build and improve them.
On Client Relationships
Whoever is the highest-level person on a given account owns that client relationship — the communication, the expectations, the overall account health. That's an important part of what we do and something we take seriously. Not every contractor will be the relationship lead on every account, but at the accountant and controller level, it's a meaningful part of the role.
The Right Fit
We're a company that's constantly evolving, and that's not going to change. The people who thrive here are the ones who are genuinely excited by that — who want to be part of building something, jump into what's next, and help create better systems and experiences for every client along the way.
We're not posting this because we need a body to fill a seat. We're posting this because there are accountants and controllers out there who are really good at what they do, want flexibility and autonomy, genuinely like working with entrepreneurs, and are looking for a partnership that grows with them. If that's you — or if any of this sounds intriguing and you want to know more — we'd love to talk.
No long application. Just reach out and let's have a conversation.
