The Opportunity We are at an exciting scaling phase and seeking an experienced Controller to help with the increased growth. You will take ownership of accounting operations, provide strategic financial insights, and directly manage our small, but capable team. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-moving biotech environment and wants to build scalable processes as we grow.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations, including month-end close, financial reporting, AP/AR, payroll, and general ledger in QuickBooks Online.
- Manage and develop our accounting team, implementing proper segregation of duties, process improvements, and training to handle growing transaction volume.
- Support or coordinate HR, benefits, and insurance administration as part of the expanded scope.
- Prepare timely and accurate financial statements, budgets, forecasts, cash-flow analysis, and KPI dashboards to support leadership decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, manage internal controls, and prepare for audits, grants, or potential funding needs.
- Handle biotech-specific accounting nuances (e.g., R&D tracking, grant revenue, clinical or contract accruals).
- Partner with the executive team on financial strategy, variance analysis, and scaling operations in a high-growth setting.
- Identify and implement system optimizations or automation to improve efficiency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred).
- 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3–5 years in a Controller or similar leadership role.
- Prior experience in biotech, life sciences, or a similar regulated/growth-oriented industry is highly desirable.
- Hands-on proficiency with QuickBooks Online (or similar) and strong Excel skills; experience with grants, contracts, or complex revenue recognition a plus.
- Proven ability to manage and develop small teams while rolling up sleeves on day-to-day tasks.
- Excellent communication skills and comfort operating in a fast-paced, collaborative biotech environment.
