Job Title: EMT/ER Tech(PRN)
Primary Function and Relationship to Total Organization:
EMT/ER Tech will assist in the Emergency Room under the direction of the Registered ER Nurse.
Reports to: Emergency Room Director and Emergency Room Nurse
Supervises: None
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Reports all significant information to nurse in charge of the patient.
- Works with other health care personnel within the organization.
- Keeps nurse informed of care rendered and duties performed.
- Answers call lights promptly.
- Gives verbal report to nursing staff at end of shift.
- Assists with transferring patients by wheelchair or cart to other departments.
- Assists patients with ambulation as needed.
- Complies with hospital and nursing service policies.
- Attends staff meetings and in-service education when appropriate.
- Demonstrates willingness to support staffing and scheduling needs.
- Cleans and restocks to Emergency Department.
- Clerical duties such as answering phones, logging patients, and discharge phone calls.
- Assist physical moving of patients: lifting and transferring.
- Assist practitioner with minor surgical procedures and laceration repairs.
- Assist with simple orthopedic procedures, application of elastic bandages, etc.
- Assist with triage and register emergency room patients, obtain BP's, TPR's, height and weight, allergies and document these along with primary assessment in the electronic medical record. All entries will be reviewed and co-signed by the RN on duty,
- Assists in Inpatient Care when needed and ER census allows.
- Takes ambulance call from 12 midnight to 6:00 am when working ER nights.
- ER night Techs perform Accu Checks in each of the ambulances during their shift.
- Performs functions other than above and within scope of practice due to extenuating circumstances.

Minimum educational requirements:
High School Education or equivalent. Current Iowa EMT license or training in an approved 120 hour nurse aide course or equivalent training. BCLS certification within 3 months of employment.
Work environment:
Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned nursing unit. Noise levels vary. May come in contact with hazardous chemicals or treatment modalities.
