Director of Veterinary Medicine

The Humane Society of Sheboygan County (HSSC) has been dedicated to the welfare of animals since its founding in 1964. As a no-kill, open admissions shelter, HSSC commits to providing care and shelter to over 2,500 homeless animals annually, ensuring that no animal in need is turned away. Operating as a 501(c)(3) organization, HSSC relies solely on generous donations, as it receives no funding from tax dollars. The society strives to connect adoptable animals to loving homes while promoting responsible pet ownership within the community.

This is a full-time, on-site role located in Sheboygan, WI, for a Director of Veterinary Medicine. The Director of Veterinary Medicine will oversee and provide medical care for shelter animals to ensure their well-being and health, comply with best practices for veterinary medicine, and manage preventive care, diagnoses, and treatments. Responsibilities include performing surgeries such as spay and neuter procedures, working collaboratively with shelter staff and volunteers, developing and implementing health protocols, and serving as a resource for animals in foster care or under community outreach programs. The role also requires maintaining accurate medical records and contributing to the education and training of staff in animal care practices.

• Veterinary medical skills, including diagnosing illnesses, treatment planning, and performing surgeries such as spay/neuter
• Problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities in medical and shelter management contexts
• Leadership and management experience, particularly in overseeing teams and collaborating with staff and volunteers
• Effective communication skills for interacting with staff, volunteers, and the community
• State licensure to practice veterinary medicine and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree
• Experience in shelter medicine or working with underserved animals is highly desirable
• Passion for animal welfare and a commitment to the no-kill philosophy
