Lead the floor. Support the team. Protect the standard of care.

The Humane Society for Hamilton County is hiring a Kennel Coordinator to help lead daily kennel operations in partnership with the Kennel Manager. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can balance animal care, team support, accountability, and fast-moving shelter operations with confidence and consistency. If you are skilled in animal handling, strong in communication, and ready to help a team stay focused, safe, and effective every day, this is meaningful work with real impact.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will:

  • Assist the Kennel Manager in leading daily kennel operations and supporting the kennel team
  • Help ensure the animals in your care receive outstanding care through proper cleaning, nutrition, daily enrichment, and close observation
  • Monitor the physical and mental well-being of dogs and cats in the building and communicate concerns quickly to the appropriate leaders
  • Support and guide staff during animal showings and help ensure strong customer service and successful adoption matches
  • Train team members on animal handling, department protocols, customer interactions, and proper introduction procedures
  • Help coach, motivate, and redirect Canine Care Specialists throughout the day to keep work on track and standards high
  • Step into a leadership role when the Kennel Manager is not on site and help ensure a clear plan is in place for the team
  • Participate in onboarding and training new animal care employees
  • Help manage staff schedules as needed and coordinate a monthly position schedule for the kennel team
  • Ensure cleaning tasks, sanitation protocols, supply organization, and department expectations are completed thoroughly and on time
  • Help maintain work areas including cleaning hubs, public hallways, visiting rooms, the kennel kitchen, indoor exercise areas, and outdoor play yards
  • Monitor inventory needs and report weekly food and supply needs as requested
  • Ensure medical books are completed daily and help ensure animals needing transport are ready for volunteers
  • Assist with opening and closing responsibilities, including completing pre-checkout expectations and helping lead the shelter in the manager’s absence
  • Provide support in difficult or escalated situations involving staff, customers, or animals
  • Participate in HSHC events, activities, and off-site duties as needed

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has at least 2 years of experience demonstrating advanced, humane animal handling in a shelter, boarding, training, or veterinary clinic setting
  • Has at least 2 years of experience managing or supervising others
  • Is Fear Free Certified
  • Understands shelter-related contagious illnesses and how to identify and manage them appropriately
  • Has experience with animal behavior modification and training programs
  • Is highly comfortable using computers, email, Microsoft Office, and systems such as PetPoint, Excel, or similar databases
  • Is a self-starter with strong problem-solving skills and initiative
  • Can multitask, prioritize, and stay steady in a fast-paced environment
  • Communicates clearly and professionally
  • Can navigate stressful situations, conflict, and unexpected challenges with maturity
  • Is flexible to work nights and weekends
  • Thrives in an environment with animal sounds, smells, allergens, and constant movement
  • Embraces a no-kill philosophy and a “whatever it takes” attitude
