Job Title: Specialty Mechanical (SM) Engineer
Duration: 1 year with potential for extension(s) (full-time)
Location: Onsite – Oak Ridge, TN (DOE Q clearance required)
Short Summary about Job:
Specialty Mechanical Engineers in the Projects Equipment Design Engineering organization create design and procurement documents for specialty, first-of-a-kind equipment such as glovebox systems, furnaces, high vacuum systems, and metal casting/machining equipment. Engineering design tasks include collaborating with designers on build-to-print design packages, developing procurement documents (equipment specifications, statements of work, and datasheets), and performing calculations and analysis associated with machine design.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
- Minimum of 10 years of experience with design/specification of custom mechanical equipment
- Experience developing build-to-print design packages and procurement documents (equipment specifications, statements of work, and datasheets) for custom, specialty equipment
- Experience performing engineering calculations and analysis for machine design, including finite element analysis, structural and seismic analysis, ergonomic studies, kinematic calculations, and heat transfer calculations
- DOE “Q” clearance
- Willing and able to work a compressed schedule (10-hour days, Monday through Thursday)
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced experience in machine design, preferably with glovebox systems, furnaces, high vacuum systems, and metal casting/machining equipment
- Thorough knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards
- Experience writing detailed, accurate procurement documents, including both design/build equipment specifications and equipment fabrication specifications for custom-designed equipment
- Experience leading multi-discipline teams — mechanical, electrical, instrumentation/controls, HVAC, piping, process, and welding disciplines — on machine design efforts
- Experience producing build-to-print equipment fabrication packages, including fabrication drawings, fabrication specifications, procurement documents, and calculations
- Experience with 3D CAD modeling using PTC Creo and/or SolidWorks
Miscellaneous/Additional Information:
- Full-time, onsite position; no travel expected
- Immediate need
- Compressed work schedule: 10 hours per day, Monday through Thursday, core hours 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- DOE Q clearance required
