Position Summary
The Yard Foreman is responsible for overseeing daily yard operations to ensure materials are handled safely, efficiently, and accurately. This role works hands-on with the yard team, coordinates workflow, maintains organization of inventory, and serves as the go-to point for day-to-day yard activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily yard operations, including loading, unloading, and staging of lumber and building materials
- Coordinate yard workflow to support timely customer deliveries and pickups
- Supervise and support yard employees, ensuring tasks are completed safely and correctly
- Operate and oversee the safe operation of forklifts and other yard equipment
- Ensure materials are stored properly and yard areas remain clean, organized, and safe
- Communicate with dispatch, drivers, and sales staff to prioritize loads and resolve issues
- Inspect incoming and outgoing materials for accuracy and damage
- Enforce safety procedures and participate in safety meetings and inspections
- Assist with training new yard employees on equipment, processes, and safety expectations
- Address minor employee issues and escalate concerns to management as needed
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Previous experience working in a lumber yard, warehouse, or outdoor materials environment preferred
- Forklift experience required (certification a plus or willingness to obtain)
- Strong knowledge of lumber products and yard operations preferred
- Ability to supervise a team in a fast-paced, outdoor environment
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lift heavy materials and work in varying weather conditions
