What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Lab Technician (MLT)- Part Time/Casual position at HUDSON PHYSICIANS SC?
The primary purpose of this position is to perform biological or chemical tests on specimens brought to the laboratory, perform phlebotomy, and to report results accurately. Position will be staffed during clinic hours.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Perform phlebotomy and procedures ordered by the physicians.
2. Judges the adequacy of submitted specimens and requests an addition specimen if unsatisfactory.
3. Processes specimens via computer in a timely fashion and keeps up to date on current charge procedures.
4. Responsible for the analysis of Quality Control specimens.
5. Accurately reports test results to the appropriate areas.
6. Helps with routine maintenance, calibration, and cleaning of equipment when requested.
7. Helps maintain adequate supplies and reagents.
8. Notifies manager of Quality Control Problems and all corrective actions taken.
9. Has experience in the following areas:
- Hematology-capable of performing CBC’s and manual differentials.
- Coagulation-Protimes
- Chemistry-capable of working with an automated chemistry analyzer.
- Microbiology-capable of setting up cultures and interpreting culture results.
- Immunology-capable of performing several manual tests; i.e., mono, pregnancy.
- Urinalysis-capable of performing macroscopic and interpreting microscopic results.
- Virology-perform tests for RSV and Influenza.
10. Willingness to teach new employees and students.
11. Willingness to share responsibility other than regular assigned duties for the day.
12. Performs Wisconsin State Proficiency testing as required.
13. Attend professional seminars and share resources with coworkers.
14. Greets patients and schedules appointments in a manner that is consistent with clinic policies and procedures.
- Schedules patient lab appointments, coordinating all information together for patient per request by Providers.
- Ensures all proper diagnosis codes and pertinent patient information is accurate prior to laboratory testing.
- Prepare Advanced Beneficiary Notices forms as needed.
- Routes medical information to the appropriate file or personnel ensuring information is accurate and completed.
- Keep lab order files up to date and well organized.
- Fax completed lab testing reports to outside specialty physicians and file appropriately.
- Verify providers and coverage concerns for patients prior to laboratory testing.
- Organizes and maintains a clean and efficient work space
- Greets and arrives vendors for meetings with Laboratory Services Manager.
SUPPLEMENTAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned by the Laboratory Services Manager.
2. Attends relevant training sessions, in-services and departmental and organizational meetings.
3. Expected to abide by the ergonomic recommendations of this job description.
4. Abides by OSHA universal precautions law and rules.
5. Abides by CLIA laws and expectations.
6. Conforms to dress code and personnel policies.
7. Adheres to the philosophy and provides comprehensive care according to a patient centered healthcare clinic.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Is subject to interruptions, high volume telephone calls, imposed deadlines and frequent problem-solving activities.
2. May be subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, staff, and personnel from other agencies.
3. Flexibility in scheduling to meet department needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetic devices that will enable these senses to function adequately.
2. Sit for several hours.
3. Subject to lifting and carrying supplies averaging 25 lbs. (i.e. cartons of paper, medical supplies, office supplies, etc.).
4. Repetitive motions involving use of phone and keyboard
Qualifications:EDUCATION:
- Minimum: Medical Laboratory Technician, Must be ASCP or NCA certified / eligible
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum: One year in a customer service oriented position
- Desired: Experience in a health care setting.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Familiarity with laboratory operations, equipment and reporting of laboratory results.
- Good organizational skills.
- Knowledge of clinic computer systems including Lab Information System.
- Ability to adapt to a team-oriented environment and maintain a professional and positive attitude.
- Display support of organization’s goals and policies.
- Interacts with team members in a respectful way, helping others, working to improve the team’s performance.
- Working knowledge of PC, Windows & Microsoft Office.
