Purpose Of Role

Reporting to the Principle Mine Engineer, the Short-Term Planning Superintendent will play a crucial role in the project by performing a variety of complex engineering duties. These include mine design, mine operation planning, and the modification or adaptation of industry best practices. The role involves optimizing mine development and implementation strategies.

Role Accountabilities

A Short-Term Planning Superintendent is a senior managerial role in the mining industry responsible for overseeing and optimizing mine planning and scheduling to ensure efficient and safe resource extraction, while also managing a team and adhering to mine regulations.

The Short-Term Planning Superintendent is responsible for instilling confidence in the mine planning by reviewing and analyzing existing data and the life-of-mine process. This role involves producing realistic detailed mine designs that enable the creation of mine short-term operating plans and schedules meeting strategic objectives established in the LOM planning and production systems.

Key Accountabilities Of The Role Include

  • Mine Plan Development & Scheduling: Develop detailed daily, weekly, and monthly production schedules, ensuring resource optimization and efficient production.
  • Ore Control and Stockpiles Management: Provide leadership and ownership of the Ore Control process, interpreting data to define precise ore vs. waste boundaries (polygons). Direct the flow of material to the sulfide concentrator, stockpiles, or waste rock facilities, and compare actual mined grades and volumes against the original geological models to improve future planning accuracy.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and develop a team of mine planners, engineers, and other relevant staff, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to perform their roles effectively.
  • Operational Efficiency: Optimizes mine operations by ensuring that plans are practical, economical, and meet all relevant standards and regulations.
  • Budget Management: Manages the mine planning budget, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and efficiently.
  • Project Support: Be part of the Copper World Integrated project team.
  • Reporting and Communication: Provides regular reports to the Principal Engineer and rest of management team on the status of mine plans, schedules, and performance.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identifies opportunities for improvement in mine planning processes and operations, implementing changes to enhance efficiency and safety.
  • Risk Assessment: Assess risks for all tasks and ensure they are controlled before and during task execution.
  • Health, Safety and Environmental compliance: Become familiar with and strictly adhere to Hudbay’s Health, Safety and Environmental standards.
  • Drive and develop the safety culture within the Mine Planning department, ensuring all designs prioritize safe production.
  • Act as a role model in complying with and supporting Hudbay’s Health, Safety and Environmental standards and practices.
  • Report all incidents and accidents, ensure they are investigated, and complete corrective safety actions on time.
  • Team Development: Provide resources and expertise to develop the mine planning team, enabling them to deliver the annual budget capably and consistently, according to their role and level of authority.
  • Stakeholder Management: Liaises with various stakeholders, including other departments within the company, government agencies, and community representatives. Develop and maintain constructive relationships with internal stakeholders (Corporate, Projects, Operations, other.) and external stakeholders (Regulatory Agencies and Authorities, Minerals Commission) to establish and adapt to existing and changing societal and regulatory expectations and requirements.

Minimum Qualifications And Education

  • Bachelor’s degree : A bachelor’s degree in mining engineering is required.
  • Advanced Degree : A post-graduate degree is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience : A minimum of ten (10) years of proven experience in mine engineering in open pit operations, of which are at least three (3) years at senior supervisory level within a technical department.

The work environment will necessitate work near moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions such as hot and/or dry conditions. Work will be conducted in locations where noise, fumes, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration may exist.
