Staff Accountant / Bookkeeper

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced accounting professional who can step into a broad client-service role covering bookkeeping, payroll, sales tax, financial reporting, and general accounting support.

This is a good fit for someone who has already spent a few years working with multiple businesses and enjoys being able to handle a little bit of everything. We’re not looking for someone who needs to be trained from the ground up—we’re looking for someone who understands accounting, knows how to work through problems, and can take ownership of their client work.

Our firm has grown significantly, but we’ve worked hard to keep a relaxed, down-to-earth culture. We take our work seriously without taking ourselves too seriously. We expect people to work hard, communicate well, take care of clients, and meet deadlines, but we don’t believe a professional accounting firm has to feel stiff or overly corporate.

What You’ll Do

• Handle monthly and periodic bookkeeping for a variety of business clients
• Prepare and process payroll and related payroll tax filings
• Prepare and file sales tax returns
• Review and categorize bank and credit card activity and maintain accurate general ledgers
• Perform bank, credit card, vendor, customer, and other account reconciliations
• Prepare and post journal entries
• Review client accounting records for errors, unusual items, and necessary adjustments
• Prepare internal and client-facing financial statements
• Assist clients with QuickBooks questions and day-to-day accounting issues
• Identify opportunities to improve client bookkeeping processes and internal controls
• Work directly with clients to gather information and resolve accounting questions
• Assist other members of the accounting and tax teams as needed

The exact mix of responsibilities will depend somewhat on your experience and strengths.

What We’re Looking For

• 3 years of bookkeeping, accounting, or public accounting experience
• Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Desktop and/or QuickBooks Online
• Comfortable handling payroll and payroll tax reporting
• Experience preparing sales tax returns
• Solid understanding of debits, credits, adjusting entries, and financial statements
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines without constant supervision
• Comfortable communicating directly with business owners and client staff
• Willingness to ask questions, learn, and help wherever needed
• Positive attitude and ability to work well in a team environment

Preferred, But Not Required

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
• Public accounting experience
• Experience with Thomson Reuters Creative Solutions products
• Experience working with multiple business clients across different industries
• Experience with more complex bookkeeping or controller-level responsibilities

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $50,000–$70,000, based on experience and ability

Experience

Accounting / bookkeeping experience: 3 years preferred

Prior public accounting experience is helpful, but not required for the right candidate.
