The San Francisco/New York based Investment Director will principally be responsible for providing:
- Exposure to the most innovative areas of financial services and technology in the US to inform the firms strategic decisions. This includes both AI as well as Digital Assets areas
- Cover various business units including Corporate & Institutional Banking (CIB) (including payments, trade and Markets and Security Services) / International Wealth and Premier Banking (IWPB), the UK business and the Technology Organization
- Close links and relationships with innovative companies, venture capital investors and the wider ecosystem to facilitate early adoption by the firm and its customers of new products and services
- Build and execute on a pipeline of potential investments for the HSBC Ventures
- Deliver a gross annual strategic and financial return on money invested in line with HSBC Ventures teams’ objectives
- Drive the identification of innovative companies and technologies and ultimately building and executing on a pipeline of potential investments
- Lead negotiations and due diligence on investment targets and present such opportunities
- Take up Board Director or Observer seats on portfolio companies and be a primary sponsor for the company internally and externally to help identify new sales opportunities and advise on the company’s strategy
- Regularly review portfolio performance and exit opportunities, and execution of such opportunities
- Lead in the evaluation of investment opportunities by undertaking detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis
- Oversee preparation of investment paper submissions and management of internal approval processes
- Lead the investment execution process including negotiation of terms, due diligence, and approvals
- Monitoring of investment performance and portfolio company development internally and externally
- Manage a team of 2-3 investors based in the US
- Accountability to Head of HSBC Ventures
- Stakeholder management including external and internal stakeholders
- Knowledge and experience of the Venture Capital, Startup, and technology industries
- Understanding of financial markets and key trends in the corporate financing and trade finance space
- Familiar with trends in AI, Digital Assets, Fintech, and broader enterprise software
- Strong existing network of innovative financial technology companies and relevant investors
- Experience in research, analysis and presentations on industries, companies, and strategies
- Experience in financial modelling and company valuations
- Enthusiasm and flexibility to work across many differing sectors and with a global team across time zones
- Proactive in research and diligence and ability to work independently as well as within a small team
- Ability to manage and develop junior members of the investment team
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritise work across multiple projects concurrently
- Good at networking and socialising opportunities widely, both internally and externally
- Broad and comprehensive understanding of concepts and principles within multiple disciplines or a fast-changing discipline
- The role requires a comprehensive understanding of several value units / products / regions / legal entities, alongside an advanced understanding of the industry and the relative positioning of the HSBC's products and services
- Covers a wide range of activities that require complex judgements based on advanced analytical thought. Problems often require an innovative approach, based on extensive research
- Is proactive in developing ideas, continuously searching for improvements in techniques which add value to the business and has full responsibility for implementation
- Latitude to make decisions within the objectives of HSBC global business / global function overall. Little guidance is available and role holder is expected to formulate strategy following the objectives of the business
- Sets strategy for value unit / region / product / legal entity
- The role requires an extremely high level of interactive listening, in order to negotiate with others often at the highest level
- The job is likely to be involved in both internal and external negotiations which will have a major impact on the function, and possibly the entire business unit
