What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director, Financial Controls & SOX position at Hoxton Circle?
Director, Financial Controls, Governance & SOX β Energy Infrastructure (NYC, in-office)
Our client is a publicly traded energy infrastructure company in gas-to-power operations that recently came through a significant debt restructuring. They're hiring a Director to take ownership of the SOX compliance program during a period of active transformation, not a steady-state maintenance role.
What makes this one worth a look: you're not maintaining a system that already works, you're building and fixing it at the same time, with real authority to do so from day one.
The Mandate
You report to the Global Controller and work closely with the Global Controller and the Accounting, Tax, IT, Treasury and Operations teams. You own the SOX program end to end: annual testing plans, risk assessments, control design. You lead remediation of identified material weaknesses, with clear plans, owners and milestones. You run the steering committee and report directly to the Audit Committee, which means a level of visibility that's rare at this seniority.
Your focus areas: COSO control environment, cash flow statement controls, tax accounting controls, ITGCs, and debt covenant monitoring.
What We're Looking For
CPA strongly preferred, 10-15 years of experience in public accounting, SOX compliance, internal controls, financial reporting or controllership. Big Four senior manager profile moving in-house, or already in-house at a public company. Real, hands-on experience remediating deficiencies or material weaknesses, not just the theory. And the appetite to work in an environment that's still imperfect and shifting, rather than one that's already settled.
Why This One
Few roles at this level come with this kind of direct Audit Committee access and this clear a mandate to transform a program rather than just run it. It's the kind of mission that builds real leadership credibility for whatever comes next.
