POSITION SUMMARY:

This position covers the Northern or Southern front desk handling walk-up customers, answering telephones, and monitoring cameras in the facility and outside the building.

STARTING SALARY HIRING RANGE:
$21.55 - $23.58
$44,824 - $49,046

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Performs technical level police operations work under regular supervision from a technical superior. Work includes enforcing relevant Howard County Code, civilian support to police work, assisting with criminal and non-criminal complaints, and performing support work for the various bureaus within the Police Department. Work may also include custody of property; collecting and preserving physical evidence; identifying criminals by prints and maintaining related records and files; identifying, capturing, transporting, and caring for animals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Works and cooperates with co-workers and supervisors at all levels.

Learns and performs all essential job functions accurately.

Answering numerous phone lines, transferring calls, taking messages, answering questions from the public.

Taking TRU's. Using the radio to contact officers.

Maintaining and ordering patrol and office supplies.

Monitor and maintaining copier and fax machines.

Communicates announcements as needed over intercom system.

Greeting visitors when they come into the station, taking reports, finding an officer to sign an ERO, fielding questions.

Uses the electric door panel to permit authorized personnel access to the secure areas of the facility.

Monitors cameras inside and outside of the station.

Monitor court ordered child custody exchanges.

Monitor medication drop-off box.

Accepts and properly distributes packages and mail.

Receive information from officers and enter data into Microsoft Access Arrest log and Tow log.

Research calls for service in I-Leads and/or Netviewer.

Submit recovered property and log chain of custody for non-criminal matters.

Fill out leave slips for patrol personnel and notify the appropriate incoming Watch Commander of callouts.

Serve as backup to building inspections and maintenance in the absence of assigned staff.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED and one (1) year related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

MILES/NCIC Authorization
Customer service skills.
Ability to keep information confidential.
Exercise good judgement.
Ability to multi-task.
Computer skills/data entry.

Front desk located within secured area of district police station.

LANGUAGE SKILLS, MATHEMATICAL SKILLS AND REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
