SALARY: The position starts at $37.36/hour - $43.76/hour, based on experience and qualifications. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

A Registered Nurse – Psychiatry performs nursing duties and telephone triage for designated providers of Howard Brown Health under the supervision of nursing administration. This role provides long-acting IM injections and adheres to the Howard Brown Health Patient Centered Medical Home Model. This role serves as a team member in Psychiatric Services , sharing primary care duties with other personnel as assigned.

 PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acts as liaison between patients/clients and providers and answers all patient/client inquiries for assigned providers regarding health issues, and serves as an advocate for patients/clients for both internal and external referrals.
  • Coordinates care with other providers as required, and schedules patient follow-ups for internal and external appointments as instructed by providers.
  • Evaluates the ability of all patients and clients to understand health plans, performs health education as needed, and notifies appropriate providers, as necessary.
  • Provides nursing care and education to patients/clients, their significant others, and staff in a compassionate manner.
  • Provides nursing care and administration of long-acting injectable medications like Invega Sustenna, Abilify Maintena, and Haloperidol Decaonoate.
  • Organizes long-acting injections and ensures they are in stock for upcoming patient appointments.
  • Coordinates with pharmacy to have injections delivered in a timely fashion.
  • Coordinates with pharmaceutical representatives to ensure there are samples of injections on-hand.
  • Ensures patients are up-to-date on medical appointments and that patients can attend specialist appointments, in collaboration and coordination with Case Managers and the team.
  • Collects, labels, and processes all specimens, including but not limited to urine, stool, semen, sputum, and blood and ensures proper protocol including:
    • Ensuring that specimens are processed and shipped in accordance with established Howard Brown laboratory policies and procedures along with research protocol.
    • Notifying providers of alarm values found in lab reports. 
    • Providing patients/clients with appropriate requisition, information, and instruction for ancillary tests and procedures ordered by providers.
  • Performs routine clinical functions, execute nursing skills and treatments, and maintains accurate and necessary patient documentation in accordance with all regulatory bodies.
  • Performs phone triage responsibilities including:
    • Performing a systematic and comprehensive interview of the caller/patient/client to determine the urgency of the patient’s problem.
    • Accurately documenting data for all calls including, but not limited to, patient/client demographic information, chief complaints, recommendations for home treatments, and referrals to primary care providers and alternative health care provider or emergency services.
    • Performing and documenting follow-up calls with patients as necessary to help ensure positive outcomes.
    • Scheduling same-day appointments or follow-up appointments with the patient’s primary care provider or alternative health care provider, as necessary.
  • Provides counseling, home treatment advice, and crisis intervention according to established protocols and standards of care.
  • Participates in quality improvement processes through data collection, evaluation of results, and implementation of recommendations.
  • Attends psychiatry meetings.
  • Assists with primary care patient responsibilities which include, but are not limited to, providing education, screening and treatment, and following standing orders to patients presenting to clinics, as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, & SKILLS REQUIRED:

 Education:

  • Nursing degree (BSN or Associates) is required.
  • Current Illinois nursing license is required.
  • CPR card is required.

Experience:

  • Experience working with patients with diagnosis of Bipolar, Depression, Schizophrenia, or other mental health disorders is required.

Preferred:

  • 1-2 years of experience in a hospital or outpatient setting is preferred.
  • Comprehensive Primary Care/Behavioral Health Nursing experience performed in an ambulatory/outpatient setting is preferred. 
  • Experience working with patients receiving long-acting injectables is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain clinical competency through continuing education, recertification (including CPR), and clinical practice
  • Ability to adhere to OSHA standards in the delivery of care to all patients
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow role assignments in alignment with Patient Centered Medical Home standards and participate in all Patient Centered Medical Home efforts
  • Strong human relation skills and customer service skills in providing patient care
  • Ability to establish good rapport
  • Knowledge of and experience with multi-ethnic, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender clients, and issues is preferred
  • Ability to adhere to Howard Brown Human Resources policies and procedures
  • Ability to actively participate in the fulfillment of the organization’s mission, vision, and core values

Conditions are pleasant and with a collegial environment.  Space is limited and must be shared for most appropriate usage.
