Job Summary
As our Intake Specialist, you will be the very first point of contact for individuals seeking assistance. This role is equal parts heart and organization. You will welcome participants, listen to their immediate needs, help them fill out essential paperwork, and connect them with the right community resources. Key Responsibilities
- Welcoming & Assessment: Greet participants with empathy and respect. Conduct initial intakes to understand their immediate needs (food, shelter, clothing, vital documents).
- Application Assistance: Guide participants step-by-step through filling out complex housing, state aid (SNAP, Medicaid), and identity document forms.
- Referrals & Resource Advising: Act as a knowledgeable guide to local Newport and Rhode Island resources. Direct participants to partner organizations for shelter, medical care, mental health support, and legal aid.
- Data Entry & Documentation: Accurately enter intake information and keep notes updated in our computer system/database while maintaining strict participant confidentiality.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Deep Compassion & Patience: A non-judgmental attitude and a strong desire to work with the unhoused population. Experience practicing trauma-informed care or de-escalation is a major plus.
- Comfort with Computers: Strong digital literacy. You should be comfortable navigating databases, using Microsoft Office/Google Workspace, and helping others navigate online application portals.
- Strong Communication: Ability to explain complicated form instructions clearly and interview participants gently to gather necessary details.
- Knowledge of Local Resources (Preferred): Familiarity with Newport-area social services, food pantries, and shelters is highly valued, though we will provide training.
