House of Hope (HOH) has served homeless families for 35 years. House of Hope operates three emergency shelters, comprehensive shelter services for parents and children, a Housing Resource Center, and the Learn2Work (LTW) initiative that includes two internship programs, the Hope Chest (Children’s Clothing Resale Shop & Job-Training Program) and a Culinary Kitchen Internship. Our sister organization, House of Hope Housing, Inc. provides permanent, affordable housing and support services for formerly homeless families with an enduring commitment to build family economic self-sufficiency, promote neighborhood stability, and provide educational opportunities to improve the lives of our poorest children.

Hours: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9-5pm; Saturday 8-3pm

Job Description:

The Kitchen Chef/Instructor will be responsible for all of the daily food production with the Kitchen Manager in the main HOH Fletcher kitchen. He/she will be an instructor and role model for House of Hope’s Learn2Work (L2W) Program, a cooking training program which develops cooking and job-readiness skills for participants seeking a job in the food service industry. As a member of the House of Hope kitchen team, you will perform all cooking and administrative duties necessary for effective kitchen management.

The principal duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • With the direction of the Kitchen Manager, he/she will ensure all the daily food required for each of our shelters and ensure it is transported, stored and inventoried, and appropriately reheated (if necessary) for consumption.
  • Help with food preparation, distribution, and quality control practices of the kitchen operation to ensure the optimum quality of product in compliance with safety and sanitation requirements and codes in both the main kitchen and the satellite kitchens.
  • Teach and mentor shelter resident interns the basics of the food service industry according to the L2W curriculum established. Choose recipes that demonstrate key nutrition, food budgeting, and food preparation lessons alongside the Kitchen Manager.
  • Work with interns to provide hands-on experience and improve their food prep and cooking skills. Role-model essential life skills for the kitchen interns.
  • Supervise participants in the kitchen, encouraging proper technique and correcting as needed. Maintain a log of skills being taught and each participant’s progress.
  • Help the Kitchen Manager with food ordering, inventorying and following a budget.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma required.
  • Professional culinary training or experience working in the food industry.
  • Current ServSafe certification.
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Capacity to stand for prolonged periods and to lift at least 20 pounds.
  • Ability to work within a culturally diverse community and as part of a team.

Additional Information: A Criminal Offenders Records Information request must be completed for this position, however, a record is not an automatic bar to employment but is reviewed in relation to the job applied for.
