What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hotel Assistant Manager position at Hotel St. Cloud?
Job Summary
Unbridled Hospitality Group is seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented, and guest-focused Assistant Hotel Manager to support the Hotel Manager at the historic Hotel St. Cloud in downtown Cañon City, Colorado. As the Assistant Manager, you will play a key role in daily operations of our beautifully restored 36-room boutique hotel—one of Colorado's ten oldest properties—ensuring exceptional guest experiences, operational excellence, and steady progress toward higher occupancy in our tourism-centric destination. You will help uphold our commitment to preserving Western history while delivering timeless luxury, character, and Unbridled Hospitality.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
- Assist the Hotel Manager in overseeing all departments, including front office, housekeeping, food & beverage (1887 Historic Eatery, Fremont Public House, and The War Room), maintenance, and sales.
- Manage daily operations of the 36-room historic property to ensure smooth efficiency, compliance with policies, and alignment with our high standards of historic charm blended with modern 4-star comfort.
- Develop and implement strategies to boost guest satisfaction, streamline processes, and increase occupancy in a market where filling rooms is driven more by attracting visitors to the Royal Gorge region than by local hotel competition.
Guest Services
- Champion exceptional, personalized guest service by setting standards, training staff, and personally handling complaints, special requests, or VIP needs in our intimate boutique setting.
- Regularly review guest feedback (from the hotel property management system, online reviews, and direct interactions) and drive improvements to create memorable stays that celebrate Cañon City's history and adventure offerings.
Staff Supervision
- Lead, train, and motivate our team using tools like Sling for scheduling, fostering a positive culture in our small, dedicated staff.
- Provide ongoing feedback, support staff development, and ensure full understanding of safety, security, and emergency procedures in a historic building.
- Oversee cross-training to maintain high service levels across front desk, housekeeping, and our on-site dining and bar venues.
Financial & Revenue Management
- Support budget preparation, revenue strategies (via the hotel property management system), and cost controls to optimize performance in a seasonal, tourism-dependent market.
- Monitor departmental expenses, track key metrics, and contribute to financial analysis aimed at maximizing occupancy and ancillary revenue from 1887, Fremont Public House, and The War Room.
Sales, Marketing & Community Engagement
- Collaborate on sales efforts, local partnerships, and marketing initiatives to promote the hotel's historic appeal, luxury rooms, fine dining, and bars to drive bookings.
- Participate in promoting the property through channels that highlight its role in revitalizing downtown Cañon City and its proximity to attractions like the Royal Gorge Route Railroad and Royal Gorge Bridge.
Quality Assurance & Facility Oversight
- Conduct regular inspections of guest rooms, public areas, and historic features to maintain pristine condition and preserve the building's heritage.
- Ensure full compliance with health, safety, legal, and historic preservation regulations in our restored 1890s property.
Administration
- Handle administrative duties including report generation in the hotel property management system, inventory management, vendor coordination, and documentation of policies/procedures.
- Support smooth integration and use of our core systems: hotel property management system (PMS), Toast (POS), and Sling (scheduling).
Qualifications
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent required; hospitality management, business, or related coursework preferred.
- Experience: Proven management experience in hotels (boutique or full-service), with direct oversight of teams, daily operations, and/or departments. Experience in historic properties or small-scale luxury hotels is a strong plus.
- Skills:
- Outstanding communication and customer service skills for creating warm, memorable guest interactions.
- Proficiency with hotel management software, including property management systems (quick learner for new systems).
- Strong leadership, team motivation, and problem-solving abilities.
- Keen attention to detail, especially in maintaining a historic boutique property.
- Solid organizational and administrative skills, including scheduling and operational oversight.
