Position Overview
Ability Beyond Barriers is seeking compassionate, dependable individuals to serve as Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in our Supervised Living Program I (SLPI) and Independent Living Services (ILS). DSPs play a vital role in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live as independently and meaningfully as possible within their communities.
This position focuses on person-centered support, skill building, and community integration while promoting dignity, independence, and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Care & Support
- Assist individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), including personal care, hygiene, and meal preparation (as needed)
- Provide supervision and guidance based on each individual’s level of independence
- Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all individuals served
Skill Development & Independence
- Support individuals in building independent living skills, including:
- Budgeting and money management
- Cooking and household maintenance
- Personal organization and time management
- Implement individualized service plans and goals
Community Integration
- Encourage participation in community activities, social events, and recreational opportunities
- Assist with transportation to appointments, work, and community outings as required
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete accurate and timely documentation of services provided
- Follow all agency policies, HIPAA guidelines, and state regulations
- Report any incidents, concerns, or significant changes promptly
Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and families
- Participate in required trainings and meetings
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Ability to pass background checks, drug screening, and required training
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Knowledge of person-centered planning and community-based services
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25–50 lbs as needed
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
