Charge Nurse Responsibilities – Inpatient Rehabilitation

Responsible for providing direct patient care while serving as an integral member of the nursing team. In accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, the Inpatient Rehabilitation Charge Nurse utilizes the nursing process to systematically assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care with the goal of maximizing each patient's physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being, while promoting the achievement of individualized care goals. During the assigned shift, the Charge Nurse serves as the unit leader and is responsible for coordinating the efficient and seamless operation of the department.

In addition to providing direct care for assigned patients, the Charge Nurse is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Providing direct patient care as assigned.
  • Coordinating patient admissions.
  • Coordinating patient discharges.
  • Arranging and facilitating patient transfers for surgeries, procedures, diagnostic testing, follow-up appointments, or transfers to other facilities.
  • Managing telemetry monitoring and reviewing telemetry strips.
  • Preparing shift assignments and coordinating staffing needs, including call-ins and emergency coverage.
  • Providing end-of-shift report to the oncoming Charge Nurse and Director of Nursing (DON).
  • Ensuring assigned patient baths are completed.
  • Performing daily crash cart checks (day shift).
  • Ensuring all ordered laboratory specimens are collected and sent to the appropriate laboratory.
  • Reviewing laboratory results and ensuring critical or pertinent findings are communicated to the physician.
  • Performing or delegating administrative duties, including chart thinning, filing, and restocking supplies and forms.
  • Rounding on patients to promote quality care and patient satisfaction.
  • Addressing patient and family questions, concerns, and complaints, and notifying or escalating all patient concerns to the DON as appropriate.
  • Conducting Joint Commission readiness audits as needed.
  • Overseeing interdisciplinary coordination of patient care with the nursing staff, physicians, respiratory therapy (RT), physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), speech therapy (ST), pharmacy, and other healthcare professionals.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current, active, and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required within six (6) months of hire.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of inpatient rehabilitation nursing experience required.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • Previous acute care nursing experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and represent the organization positively.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and compliance guidelines.
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and make appropriate decisions when necessary.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and software applications relevant to job responsibilities.
