What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer / Job Shop Planner position at Horizon Manufacturing & Repair?
Help Plan and Drive Complex Job Shop Work From Order to Completion
Horizon Manufacturing & Repair is looking for a smart, driven, technically capable Manufacturing Engineer / Job Shop Planner to help plan and coordinate work through our machining and industrial repair operation.
We are not a repetitive production shop.
Our work is high-mix, low-volume and technically challenging, including CNC and manual machining, welding, hydraulic repair, mechanical repair and reverse engineering for heavy industrial customers.
We need someone who understands manufacturing, enjoys solving problems, and can help turn incoming work into an effective plan for the shop.
This is a hands-on technical planning position — not a desk-only scheduling role.
What You'll Do
Working closely with our Shop Manager, Project Managers and department leads, you will:
- Review work orders, drawings and customer requirements
- Plan manufacturing sequences, routing and machine selection
- Help determine tooling, fixturing, programming and setup requirements
- Maintain and improve production scheduling and job priorities
- Make sure jobs are ready before they reach the shop floor
- Identify bottlenecks, capacity problems and stalled jobs
- Support CNC programming, setup and process improvement
- Review estimated vs. actual labor and job performance
- Maintain accurate work-order and scheduling information in our ERP system
- Help improve setup time, machine utilization, WIP, throughput and on-time delivery
You will spend significant time in the shop, at machines and working directly with the people doing the work.
Who We're Looking For
There isn't one required career path for this position.
You might be:
- A strong CNC machinist/programmer ready to move into technical planning and leadership
- A manufacturing or mechanical engineer with meaningful hands-on machining experience
- A manufacturing/process engineer from a job shop environment
- An experienced job shop planner or scheduler with strong machining knowledge
What matters most is your technical ability, aptitude, organization, drive and ability to get results.
Preferred Experience
Strong candidates will have experience with several of the following:
- CNC mills and/or lathes
- CNC setup and programming
- Manufacturing process planning
- Reading complex drawings and GD&T
- Tooling and fixturing
- CAD/CAM
- Job shop scheduling
- ERP/MRP systems
- High-mix / low-volume manufacturing
Experience with Mazak, Mazatrol, Haas, Fusion 360 or MIE Trak Pro is a plus.
The Right Person
We are looking for someone who is:
- Highly intelligent and learns quickly
- Driven, energetic and self-motivated
- Organized and strong at follow-through
- Technically curious and mechanically minded
- Comfortable making decisions and solving problems
- Confident working with experienced machinists and tradespeople
- Equally comfortable at a computer and on the shop floor
- Hungry to learn, improve and take on greater responsibility
What Success Looks Like
You will help us create a shop where:
Jobs are properly planned. Materials, tooling and information are ready. Priorities are clear. Machines stay productive. Problems are identified early. And customer commitments are met.
If you have strong manufacturing or machining experience and are looking for an opportunity to move beyond simply running jobs and have a bigger impact on how an entire shop operates, we want to talk to you.
Horizon offers challenging work, modern equipment, significant responsibility and the opportunity to grow with a company that is committed to becoming an exceptional manufacturing organization.
