What are the responsibilities and job description for the Apprentice Sheet Metal Mechanic position at Hopewell Sheet Metal Manufacturing?
About Hopewell Sheet Metal Manufacturing
Hopewell Sheet Metal Manufacturing is a trusted provider of quality custom sheet metal for the trades. From our 30,000-square-foot facility in Hagerstown, we have served the Mid-Atlantic for 45 years with craftsmanship, reliability, and efficiency. Our small, dedicated team of 25 takes ownership, pitches in where needed, and grows with the business.
What You’ll Do
We are looking for an Apprentice Sheet Metal Mechanic looking to learn the trade alongside our experienced team. Every piece we make is custom to the project, and every delivery is a chance to earn the customer’s next job.
This is a hands-on, physical role in a manufacturing setting. You will start with the basics, such as moving material, measuring, and helping with layout and assembly. As your skills grow, you will take on more of the work yourself. No prior sheet metal experience is required. We will teach you.
We train our apprentices in-house, and this is not a registered apprenticeship with the State of Maryland.
Key Responsibilities
- Working safely every day and calling out unsafe conditions if you see them
- Actively learning our processes and equipment
- Over time, becoming fully capable in operating automated equipment and laying out, cutting, forming, and assembling custom sheet metal products
- Looking for better ways to get the work done and share them with the team
- Keeping the shop and our equipment clean and organized
What We’re Looking For
- Willingness to learn. You take direction well and look for ways to get a little better every day.
- Mechanical interest and comfort with basic math. Experience working with your hands in a shop class, construction, manufacturing, or personal projects is a plus. You can read a tape measure and work with fractions, or you are eager to learn.
- Strong attention to detail. You read work orders and drawings carefully and fabricate accurately.
- Pride in your work. You measure twice, check your own work, and are never quite done making things better. If you aren’t sure, you ask instead of guess.
- A team player. You share what you know and celebrate wins. When something goes wrong, you help fix it instead of pointing fingers.
Physical Requirements
This is a physical, hands-on job. You must be able to do the following safely, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Lift and carry up to 35 pounds. You will do this regularly throughout the day, and it should not be a struggle.
- Lift overhead with both arms. You will lift materials up to 35 pounds above your head using both arms.
- Squat, crouch, kneel, and bend. Some jobs require working low to the ground, reaching into tight spaces, or moving in unusual positions.
- Stay on your feet. You will stand, walk, and move around the shop for most of your shift.
- Work with your hands. You will handle tools, sheet metal, and equipment that require a steady grip and good hand control.
Compensation
Pay range: $18 to $23 per hour, based on experience and skills.
What We Offer
- Comprehensive benefits. PTO, health insurance, 401(k) with company contribution, short-term disability and life insurance, and a Sam’s Club membership.
- Paid on-the-job training. You will learn the trade from experienced mechanics while you earn.
- Room to grow. As your skills develop, you can grow into a Sheet Metal Mechanic or other roles within the business.
- Work that matters. We make real things that keep people warm, cool, and safe.
- Stability. The company has been steady for 45 years.
- Climate-controlled shop
