General Function:
The Maintenance Mechanic I Water Meter Maintenance is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and installation work involving water meters, water distribution systems, and related equipment. This position ensures accurate water metering and supports the maintenance of water infrastructure, facilities, and equipment.
Work includes installing, testing, repairing, and replacing water meters and Encoder Receiver Transmitters (ERTs); maintaining and repairing mechanical and electrical equipment; and performing general facility and grounds maintenance.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Water Distribution & Wastewater Collection. Performance is regularly evaluated through observation of outcomes and review of oral and written reports submitted to the supervisor.

NoneEssential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Installs, tests, repairs, and replaces 3/4 x 5/8-inch and larger water meters used by the City.
  • Performs installation, maintenance, and repair of Encoder Receiver Transmitters (ERTs) and remote-read meters.
  • Documents meter-related work accurately in asset management and customer service systems.
  • Validates work orders both in the field and in the office.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs of water distribution equipment, pumps, valves, and mechanical systems.
  • Assists in leak detection, repair of water mains and service laterals, and maintenance of related facilities such as lift stations, tanks, ditches, trenches, and manholes.
  • Performs cleaning and maintenance of meter boxes, buildings, facilities, and grounds; replaces or reports broken lids and covers.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Delivers exceptional customer service while addressing service-related concerns.
  • Maintains and inputs accurate field data using mobile and office software.
  • Responds to emergency callouts and works extended hours when needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Assists in training other staff in meter operations and maintenance procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with all work safety standards and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Type of Appointment/Work hours:
  • Full-time/Regular in-person position.
  • Standard workweek, which is forty (40) hours of work per week consisting of five (5) days of eight (8) hours per day. The workday may be varied for the efficient delivery of public service.
  • Will be required to work other than the standard workweek on occasion, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Will be required to work occasional overtime or shift assignments, if applicable.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in water system maintenance, repair, or meter operations, or a related field is required.
  • Experience with pumps, plumbing, and electrical/mechanical equipment is required.
  • Must have the ability to perform physically demanding work in confined spaces, manholes, and trenches, and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection License (Class A or C) is preferred.
  • May be required to work unusual hours in emergency situations.
  • Must comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with mobile and office software for data entry and asset management.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Must pass the background screening process.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance:
  • The employee must successfully pass a background screening process and comply with the City’s Drug-Free Workplace policy.
  • The City will also verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired so the proper completion of Form I-9 is required, which includes the employee providing documents evidencing identity and employment authorization.
