Position Overview
The Senior Cost Engineer plays a critical role in managing financial oversight, cost control, and budget alignment for a large-scale natural gas power plant construction project. This position ensures accurate tracking of project costs, supports capital planning, and integrates financial systems with field operations. A key responsibility includes aligning the Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS) with the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to ensure cost and schedule integration across development, construction, and commissioning phases.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight & Reporting
- Lead preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in compliance with US GAAP and regulatory requirements
- Develop and maintain accounting policies and a strong internal control environment to support business operations
- Oversee accounting for complex areas, including fixed assets, CIP, debt, equity, and derivative transactions
- Prepare and review accounting memos for complex or non-routine transactions and ensure proper documentation
- Monitor changes in accounting standards and implement updates impacting financial reporting and policies
Accounting Operations
- Oversee general accounting functions, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and financial reporting activities
- Lead and continuously improve the monthly close process to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
- Maintain an accounting calendar aligned with internal reporting needs and external stakeholder requirements
- Support accounting for financing activities, including debt facilities, drawdowns, and covenant compliance
- Partner with Finance to support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis across the organization
Audit & Compliance
- Serve as primary contact for external auditors and manage audit processes, including PBC coordination and walkthroughs
- Ensure audit readiness through accurate documentation, reconciliations, and adherence to internal controls
- Support regulatory, lender, and other external audit requirements as needed across the organization
Systems & Process Improvement
- Lead selection, implementation, and optimization of accounting systems and tools, including ERP platforms like NetSuite
- Drive automation and process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce risk, and support business growth
- Develop and maintain standardized accounting procedures and documentation to support scalable operations
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Leadership
- Partner with internal and external stakeholders to ensure accounting implications are considered in key decisions
- Act as a trusted advisor on accounting matters, supporting leadership with clear and timely financial insights
- Build, lead, and develop a high-performing accounting team focused on accountability and continuous improvement
- Establish scalable processes and controls to support organizational growth and evolving business needs
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
- 10 years of experience in project controls, cost control, or project accounting for large capital projects
- Experience with EPC, energy, utility, or industrial construction strongly preferred
- Familiarity with DOE loan requirements or other federally funded capital projects is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, highly dynamic project environment and navigate complex challenges
- Proven ability to assess workflows, define effective processes, and implement scalable solutions
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse technical and operational teams
