Title: Mechanical Engineer

Type: Full-Time

Comp: $85K - $135K Equity (TBN)

Location: Tacoma, WA

About Us

Homeostasis is pioneering advanced carbon conversion technology that transforms industrial CO2 emissions into valuable carbon materials. Using our innovative molten carbonate electrolysis process, we convert CO2 from atmospheric and emission sources into high-value products like graphite and carbon nanotubes. These materials have critical applications in energy storage, particularly as anode materials in Li-ion batteries. We're building strong relationships with leading industry partners to integrate our technology into their production processes, enabling a circular carbon economy while addressing domestic supply chain needs for advanced battery materials.

The Role

We're seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our growing technical team. The Mechanical Engineer will support the design and integration of mechanical systems across all subsystems, with particular focus on implementing environmental controls and autonomous/remote controlled mechanisms within a controlled, high temperature environment . You'll work closely with the Project Managing Mechanical Engineer, Fluids Engineer, and Electrical Engineer to create robust mechanical solutions for our carbon conversion reactor. This role requires expertise in structural design, thermal management, and mechanical integration, with an emphasis on creating scalable solutions for future pilot implementation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Homeostasis tech team on the design and fabrication of the Block-4 electrochemical reactor for CO2 reduction to graphite
  • Support mechanical design across Block-4 subsystems with focus on heat transfer, temperature control, structures, and high-temperature mechanisms
  • Lead the design of various subsystems and components of Block-4
  • Develop and document CAD models, engineering drawings, and fabrication specifications
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering team to establish design requirements and ensure compatibility of all subsystems
  • Establish and update mechanical design requirements
  • Support prototype fabrication, assembly, testing, and iteration
  • Contribute to safety assessments, risk mitigation, and operational procedures
  • Design for scalability for future pilot-scale generations of our tech

Qualifications

  • Required:
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 2-5 years of experience in mechanical design and prototype development
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software and mechanical design tools
  • Experience with thermal management in high-temperature environments
  • Knowledge of materials selection for specialized applications
  • Familiarity with fabrication processes and manufacturing constraints
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to commit full-time (40 hours/week) for the 6-month project duration
  • Located in or willing to relocate to Seattle/Tacoma area
  • Authorization to work in the United States
  • Highly Desired:
  • Experience with heat transfer and temperature control at high temperatures
  • Background in prototype development for chemical or electrochemical processes
  • Knowledge of automation systems and mechanical integration
  • Experience with design for manufacturability and scalability
  • Track record of successful cross-functional collaboration in technical projects
  • Experience with design review processes and documentation standards

The Ideal Candidate

You're a versatile, hands-on mechanical engineer who excels at integrating complex systems into functional prototypes. You have strong design skills combined with practical fabrication knowledge and can bridge the gap between theoretical design and practical implementation. You're comfortable working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and can adapt to evolving requirements in a fast-paced environment. You're detail-oriented in your approach to mechanical safety and system reliability, while maintaining an innovative mindset for solving unique engineering challenges. Most importantly, you're passionate about developing breakthrough climate technology and ready to make a significant contribution to our carbon conversion reactor design.
