Electrical Engineer

Location: Tacoma, WA

Type: Contract

Rate Range: $60-90 / hr

Expected time commitment: 6 months; 20-30hr/wk

About Us

Homeostasis is pioneering advanced carbon conversion technology that transforms industrial CO2 emissions into valuable carbon materials. Using our innovative molten carbonate electrolysis process, we convert CO2 from atmospheric and emission sources into high-value products like graphite and carbon nanotubes. These materials have critical applications in energy storage, particularly as anode materials in Li-ion batteries. We're building strong relationships with leading industry partners to integrate our technology into their production processes, enabling a circular carbon economy while addressing domestic supply chain needs for advanced battery materials.

The Role

We're seeking an Electrical Engineer contractor to join our technical team for the design of our next-gen prototype, Block-4. In this position, you'll work with us to design and implement the electrical systems, instrumentation, and control architecture for our CO2 conversion reactor, focused primarily on a novel automated material collection subsystem. You'll work closely with mechanical (mechatronics) and fluids engineers to create integrated systems that enable autonomous and precise control of our electrochemical process. This role requires experience in firmware design, automatic control, communication protocols, automation, sensor and actuator sourcing/integration, and power management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Homeostasis tech team to create the newest generation of our electrochemical carbon conversion reactor, Block-4
  • Manage the design and integration of electrical systems for Block-4
  • Establish and update mechanical design requirements.
  • Design and implement electronics and control for automated material collection
  • Component selection to meet designs, verifying compliance with required operation.
  • Source and integrate sensors and actuators with control systems for real-time monitoring and feedback
  • Collaborate on system integration efforts, working closely with mechanical and fluid engineers to centralize control architecture
  • Program and configure PLCs, microcontrollers, or similar control hardware
  • Design power distribution for control systems and reactor core (high power DC)
  • Support testing and validation of electrical systems throughout development cycles
  • Create electrical documentation including schematics, wiring diagrams, and control logic
  • Contribute to technical documentation and standard operating procedures
  • Design for scalability to pilot scale reactors
  • Drive prototyping of electrical and control systems

Qualifications

Required:

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 3 years of experience with automation and control systems
  • Proficiency with electrical CAD tools and documentation standards
  • Experience with sensor and actuator sourcing, integration, and interfacing
  • Knowledge of communication protocols
  • Knowledge of power systems and electrical safety requirements
  • Ability to design control systems for electromechanical applications
  • Located in or willing to relocate to Seattle/Tacoma area
  • Authorization to work in the United States

Highly Desired:

  • Track record of implementing automated systems in prototype environments
  • Experience with Human-Machine Interface design
  • Background in high-temperature process control
  • Experience with hazardous environment electrical design and safety standards
  • Familiarity with gas monitoring and control systems

The Ideal Candidate

You're a versatile, hands-on electrical engineer who thrives on multidisciplinary projects. You have a strong foundation in control systems and automation, with the ability to design reliable electrical systems for challenging environments. You're comfortable working on early-stage technology and can adapt to evolving requirements. You're detail-oriented in your approach to electrical safety and system reliability, but also creative in finding solutions to unique engineering challenges. Most importantly, you're passionate about developing innovative climate technology and ready to play a key role in scaling our solution.

Why Join Us

  • Opportunity to develop breakthrough climate technology
  • Work directly with founding team in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
  • Chance to shape our reactor’s electrical architecture from the ground up
  • Exposure to early-stage startup project development, opportunity to transition into a full-time position.
  • Beautiful Pacific Northwest location
