This position is directly accountable to the Rural Health Resources of Jackson County, Inc. (RHRJC) Chief Executive Officer with clinical supervision by the Holton Community Hospital Chief of Medical Staff and/or designated employed physician. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides high-quality, patient-centered care in the Emergency Department of Holton Community Hospital. This position delivers advanced assessment, diagnosis, and treatment to patients across the lifespan, including emergent stabilization, routine episodic care, and coordination of transfers when higher-level care is required. The APP practices collaboratively with physicians and the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, timely, and efficient emergency care for the community.

Person employed in this position is permitted wide latitude for the exercise of independent clinical judgment subject to limitations of an advanced practitioner as defined by Kansas laws and the Holton Community Hospital Medical Staff Bylaws. Acts in accordance with legal and ethical professional responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing or physician assistant studies from an accredited institution.
  • Current, unrestricted Kansas license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA).
  • Current DEA registration
  • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS and TNCC certifications.
  • Minimum of two years of clinical experience in emergency medicine, urgent care, or critical care required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ENPC Certification.
  • Experience working in a rural or community hospital setting.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems used in emergency care.
  • Advanced training or coursework in mental health crisis intervention.

Job Duties

  • Clinical Care
    • Performs comprehensive assessments, diagnoses, and manages acute and chronic conditions in patients of all ages presenting to the Emergency Department.
    • Provides rapid triage, stabilization, and treatment interventions in trauma situations following hospital protocols.
    • Initiates and interprets diagnostic tests, radiology studies, EKG’s and laboratory results.
    • Orders and administers medications, treatments, and procedures within scope of practice.
    • Manages medical emergencies including cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and behavioral health crises.
    • Performs procedures such as suturing, splinting, I&D, wound care, airway management, line placement, and other skills appropriate to training and hospital credentialing.
    • Collaborates with physicians for complex cases and consults with specialty services as needed.
    • Coordinates patient transfers to higher-level trauma or specialty centers when required, including communication with receiving facilities and EMS.
  • Trauma & Emergency Preparedness
    • Acts as a key clinical provider in trauma activations according to Level IV Trauma guidelines.
    • Participates in regular trauma drills, emergency preparedness planning, and quality initiatives.
    • Ensures accurate documentation for trauma cases and compliance with trauma program standards.
  • Patient Education & Communication
    • Provides clear, compassionate patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatments, and discharge plans.
    • Supports continuity of care by coordinating follow-up appointments, community resources, and safety planning for patients.
  • Teamwork & Collaboration
    • Works in close partnership with ED physicians, nursing staff, EMS personnel, and ancillary departments.
    • Contributes to a positive team environment and supports a culture of safety.
    • Acts as a resource and mentor to nursing staff and clinical students as appropriate.
  • Regulatory & Quality Responsibilities
    • Responsible for ensuring that all services are provided in a manner consistent with the RHRJC mission, the CMS Conditions of Participation for Critical Access Hospitals, applicable State/Federal Regulations, RHRJC policies and procedures and clinical practice standards.
    • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, which may include chart audits, case reviews, and performance metrics.
    • Compliant with Critical Access Hospital requirements, including documentation and care delivery standards specific to rural emergency care.
  • Professional Practice
    • Maintains required licensure, certifications, continuing education, and clinical competencies.
    • Engages in evidence-based practice and updates clinical knowledge regularly.
    • Practices within approved clinical privileges and scope of practice.
