MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Position Summary:

The Nurse Manager for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is responsible for overseeing and managing the nursing operations within these units in a hospital setting. This role requires strong leadership skills, clinical knowledge, and the ability to provide guidance and support to the nursing staff. The Nurse Manager will collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care, promote a safe and positive work environment, and achieve departmental goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management:

  • Provide leadership and direction to the nursing staff, including recruitment, training, and performance management.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective unit operations.
  • Foster a positive work culture that promotes teamwork, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Manage staffing levels and schedules to ensure adequate coverage and optimal patient care.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the nursing staff and provide regular feedback and coaching.

Clinical Oversight:

  • Ensure that nursing care is delivered in accordance with established standards and protocols.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop and implement evidence-based practices and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor patient outcomes and implement strategies to improve patient satisfaction and safety.
  • Stay updated with current trends and advancements in NICU nursing practice and incorporate them into unit operations.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Assist in the development and management of the unit budget, ensuring efficient utilization of resources.
  • Collaborate with the hospital administration to identify and prioritize equipment, supply, and staffing needs.
  • Monitor and control unit expenses and implement cost-saving measures where appropriate.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Foster effective communication and collaboration among healthcare team members, including physicians, nurses, and support staff.
  • Act as a liaison between the unit and other departments within the hospital to facilitate smooth patient flow and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Collaborate with other nurse managers and hospital leadership to address organizational goals and initiatives.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory and accreditation standards, including those related to patient safety, infection control, and documentation.
  • Participate in and support regulatory inspections and audits as required.

The Nurse Manager ensures that nursing care is delivered in accordance with established standards and protocols through several strategies:

  1. Policy Development and Implementation: The Nurse Manager collaborates with the healthcare team to develop and implement policies and procedures that outline the standards and protocols for nursing care in the NICU. These policies are based on evidence-based practice guidelines, regulatory requirements, and best practices in the field.
  2. Education and Training: The Nurse Manager ensures that nursing staff receive comprehensive education and training on the established standards and protocols. This includes orientation programs for new hires and ongoing continuing education to keep the staff updated with any changes or advancements in practice. Regular competency assessments are also conducted to ensure that nurses are proficient in delivering care according to the standards.
  3. Quality Monitoring and Audits: The Nurse Manager establishes mechanisms for monitoring the quality of nursing care delivered in the units. This includes conducting regular audits and assessments to evaluate compliance with the established standards and protocols. Any deviations or non-compliance are identified and addressed promptly through corrective actions and additional education/training as needed.
  4. Performance Evaluation and Feedback: The Nurse Manager regularly evaluates the performance of the nursing staff to ensure adherence to the established standards and protocols. Feedback is provided to individual nurses regarding their performance, highlighting areas of strength and areas that require improvement. The Nurse Manager also provides coaching and mentoring to support staff in meeting the expected standards of care.
  5. Collaboration and Communication: The Nurse Manager maintains open and effective communication with the nursing staff to reinforce the importance of adhering to established standards and protocols. Regular team meetings, huddles, and one-on-one discussions provide opportunities to discuss challenges, share best practices, and address any concerns or questions related to delivering care according to the standards.
  6. Continuous Quality Improvement: The Nurse Manager actively participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives to identify opportunities for enhancing nursing care delivery. This includes analyzing data, participating in interdisciplinary committees, and implementing evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes and ensure compliance with established standards.

By employing these strategies, the Nurse Manager plays a critical role in ensuring that nursing care is consistently delivered in accordance with established standards and protocols, promoting patient safety, and maintaining high-quality care in NICU.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications (Indicate minimum years of job experience, skills or abilities required for the job.)

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in NICU nursing.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage resources, prioritize tasks, and make informed decisions.
  • Proficient in computer systems and healthcare technology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work in a union environment.
  • Strong knowledge of NICU nursing practices, policies, and procedures

Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications (Indicate preferred years of job experience, skills or abilities required for the job.)

  • Previous management or leadership experience preferred.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation (List any licensure or certification required and specify name of agency.)

  • Valid California Registered Nurse (RN) License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate from the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certificate from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) or American Heart Association (AHA)
  • S.T.A.B.L.E. Baby Assessment (required within 6 months of hire)
  • Los Angeles County Fire Card (required within 30 days of hire)
  • Assault Response Competency (ARC) (required within 30 days of hire)
