What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth & Volunteer Services Coordinator position at Holland, City of (MI)?
Coordinates City government Holland Youth Advisory Council (HYAC), Youth on Boards (YOB) 087, and Teen Court. Provides leadership to implement youth activities for students in Holland Youth Advisory Council.
- Part Time (25 hours per week)
- Coordinates various youth-oriented activities in City government, including the City Youth Advisory Council, Youth on Boards, Teen Court, and others, as necessary.
- Identifies and engages students in continued leadership development and opportunities to serve the community.
- Assists in coordination of youth public relations events/activities, including publicizing events and promoting City volunteering opportunities for youth through HYAC City website, City Newsletter, and social media outlets.
- Promotes City volunteering opportunities through websites, social media, and City newsletter for all City Departments.
- Recruit City of Holland Special Project/Event citizen and student volunteers needed for special departmental projects and City events.
- Develops volunteer work descriptions and builds cross-functional database of skilled volunteers.
- Conducts annual volunteer recognition event.
- Identifies, recruits, trains and evaluates youth and adult volunteers. Maintains database and other records detailing youth volunteer activities. As a part of this process, he/she will conduct reference checks.
- Provides supervision for youth volunteers participating in special projects and events.
- Coordinates the day-to-day operation of the City’s Youth Service activities, including possible supervision of internship staff and coordination of special events.
- Facilitates meetings between City officials and staff to identify issues and activities important to youth in the community.
- Maintains networking contacts with youth and youth organizations/associations throughout the community to assess their needs and priorities. Identifies and partners with local organizations to leverage resources.
- Provides project management support to the Human and International Relations Commission on projects including the International Festival of Holland.
- Recruit students for the next academic year.
OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Obtains quotes from vendors, writes purchase orders, and processes payments for services and products in support of special City youth events.
- Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.
- The job requires knowledge acquired through the completion of Bachelor of Arts degree in a public administration, public service, or educational leadership for young adults, or at least 3 years of experience working with high school-age youth.
- Two to four years of experience in organizing community events and/or coordinating volunteer efforts, preferably in a governmental setting with an emphasis on youth.
- Interpersonal skills are necessary to communicate effectively with various levels of City personnel, the general public, youth, and parents in situations requiring tact and patience.
- Ability to effectively communicate in Spanish, both verbally and in writing. This ability is desirable but not required.
- Operational knowledge of computers and software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Photoshop, CANVA, etc. is required. Other graphic design software is acceptable.
- Familiarity with social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
- Able to multi-task between committees and department responsibilities. Must be able to plan and manage time wisely.
- Supervisory skills are necessary to coordinate, assign, and review the work of youth volunteers.
- Mental ability to experience pressure related to meeting deadlines and working on projects requiring attention to detail with frequent disruptions.
- Ability to work afternoon, evenings, and weekends for special events and to be available for student interaction and leadership, during student-planned events.
- Ability to have positive interactions with the public, parents, educators and students to promote the Holland Advisory Council and Youth on Boards.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Normal office environment with minimal discomfort due to heat, dust, and noise.
- Occasional lifting, pulling and/or carrying of items weighing up to 25 lbs. is required.
- Physical ability to periodically sit in one position for extended periods of time.
- Physical ability to occasionally lift/carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.
