Under the general direction of the Assistant Finance Director, responsible for accounting tasks involved in preparing, analyzing, interpreting and presenting accounting data; various accounting, budgeting, reporting, and grant management functions in compliance with federal and state statutes. The position performs basic and specialized accounting work that ranges from task-oriented, routine duties to assisting with larger department initiatives.
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial records, including general ledger entries, financial statements, and reports.
- Works closely with other departments and other government agencies to provide accounting and reporting.
- Perform monthly account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and consistency in financial reports.
- Prepares, examines, or analyzes accounting records, financial statement or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness and compliance with local, state and federal guidelines.
- Assist with the tracking and capitalization of fixed assets, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with capitalization policies
- Support the financial administration of grants, including tracking expenditures and preparing financial reports.
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and monitor expenditures to ensure adherence to budgetary constraints.
- Assist with the annual audit and the provision of necessary documentation and information.
- Serves as a backup for other Finance Department processes, including cash receipts, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll as needed.
- Participate in and contribute to special projects as assigned.
- Proactively seek knowledge, new tasks and responsibilities.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- The job requires knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. A CPA or CPFO certification is preferred.
- One to three years accounting experience, preferably in municipal environment or familiarity with governmental accounting.
- Interpersonal skills are necessary to provide courteous and accurate information and responses to community members, vendors, and various levels of City personnel.
- Proficient computer skills are necessary to work with software such as word processing, spreadsheets, accounting and other web-based applications.
- Ability to make routine mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
- Mental ability to frequently handle pressures related to working on projects requiring attention to detail and perform data entry for prolonged periods of time.
- Physical ability to lift and transport files weighing up to 50 pounds.
