Opportunity:

The Urban Forestry Technician is a seasonal role that will support tree plantings, tree maintenance, and outreach and engagement to promote best tree-care practices and sustainable forest management at both Holden Forests & Gardens’ campuses and across Northeast Ohio. The Urban Forestry Technician will work closely with HF&G staff and community partners, particularly through our Tree Corps Crew Program, which this position will support logistically while participating in the program. The Urban Forestry Technician will have the chance to participate in professional development, such as workshops, soft skill training, and networking along with the Tree Corps CREW members. This position is based at the Holden Arboretum campus in Kirtland, OH with occasional travel to the Cleveland Botanical Garden in Cleveland, OH.

Position Details:

  • Position begins the week of August 4th
  • 19-week seasonal position (ending December 12th)
  • 40 hours per week


Key Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities of Urban Forestry Technician include, but are not limited to: 

  • Support Holden Forests & Gardens’ mission, vision, and values
  • Support community forestry projects in the city of Cleveland and around northeast Ohio in support of the Cleveland Tree Plan
  • Help with development, coordination and implementation of Tree Corps program
  • Provide oversight of Tree Corps CREW members when necessary, including driving the team to events and leading workshops
  • Interface with community partners
  • Help develop and update informational materials, technical bulletins, and program materials
  • Assist with initiatives including planting, tree maintenance, assessment, and inventory
  • Assist with maintenance of the Tree Plotter database
  • Support and help develop trainings and workshops for Tree Corps CREW members


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Demonstrate a passion for people and nature
  • Pursuing or recently completed an undergraduate degree in Environmental Education, Urban Forestry, Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Plant Science, Environmental Justice or related field, preferred but not required
  • Ability to understand basic instructions is required. Bilingual individuals, highly desired
  • Experience with low-income communities desired
  • Strong communication, organizational skills, adaptability, and critical thinking skills, highly desired
  • Able to work well in a diverse team
  • Able to work independently when needed
  • An interest in working outdoors performing manual labor in all weather conditions
  • Proficient use of Microsoft 365 products, specifically Teams, Outlook (email and calendar), Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Working with or managing team members, a plus
  • A valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record, required 


Physical Requirements:

Must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Perform required tasks in all weather conditions 
  • Ability to safely operate small-engine machinery e.g. brush cutter or weed-whip or a desire to learn
  • Effective vision and hearing
  • Hand and arm dexterity
  • Walking and working on wet, uneven, slippery terrain
  • Occasionally lifting and carrying of up to 50 lbs. 
  • Kneeling, bending, stooping, grabbing, and reaching
