Position Overview
The Inventory Controller owns the company’s inventory position end-to-end, with direct accountability for inventory dollars, availability, and efficiency. This role is responsible not just for maintaining inventory, but actively optimizing it—balancing service levels, working capital, and cost.
This position operates with decision-making authority across purchasing, vendor selection, and warehouse inventory processes, and is expected to continuously improve systems, reduce costs, and drive measurable financial impact.
Key Responsibilities
Inventory Ownership & Financial Accountability
- Own total inventory value, accuracy, and performance across all locations
- Manage inventory as a financial asset, optimizing working capital while maintaining service levels
- Drive improvements in inventory turns, reduction of excess/obsolete stock, and minimization of stockouts
- Perform cycle counts, reconciliations, and variance analysis with full accountability for discrepancies
Inventory Strategy & Optimization
- Lead ABC analysis to prioritize inventory focus and control
- Develop, implement, and continuously refine Economic Order Quantities (EOQ)
- Establish and maintain reorder point and safety stock models based on demand variability and lead times
- Proactively identify and execute opportunities to reduce inventory dollars without impacting operations
Purchasing Direction & Supply Coordination
- Direct and influence purchasing decisions based on inventory strategy and financial targets
- Ensure timely and cost-effective replenishment aligned with operational demand
- Collaborate with operations and production to align supply planning with real-world consumption
Vendor Management & Cost Optimization
- Own vendor relationships, including selection, evaluation, and performance management
- Solicit quotes, negotiate pricing, terms, and lead times
- Identify and execute cost-saving opportunities through sourcing strategies, vendor consolidation, and renegotiation
- Hold vendors accountable for delivery performance, quality, and cost
Warehouse Process Ownership
- Maintain authority over inventory-related warehouse processes including receiving, picking, and material handling
- Ensure process discipline and standardization across all inventory touchpoints
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase accuracy, efficiency, and throughput
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Track and report key metrics including inventory turns, working capital, stockouts, and excess inventory
- Provide data-driven insights and recommendations to leadership
- Build and improve systems, tools, and processes to scale inventory management capabilities
Qualifications
- Strong understanding of inventory management principles (ABC analysis, EOQ, reorder points)
- Experience with ERP systems and inventory management tools
- Strong analytical capability (Excel or equivalent required)
- Experience in purchasing, supply chain, or operations preferred
- Demonstrated ability to manage vendors and negotiate effectively
- High ownership mindset with strong attention to detail and process discipline
