Job Description

The Physical Therapist Assistant works under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist to perform assigned procedures and treatment activities based on the established Physical Therapy plan of care. This role reviews physician referrals, patient reports, Physical Therapy evaluations, treatment goals, and the medical record to support safe and effective patient care.

The Physical Therapist Assistant provides treatment, education, documentation, and patient support across assigned clinical settings. This role also communicates patient progress or changes in condition to the Physical Therapist and supports the overall care team by helping maintain quality, safety, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the Physical Therapy treatment plan under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist.
  • Review physician referrals, patient reports, Physical Therapy evaluations, goals, and medical records to guide treatment.
  • Contact the Physical Therapist regarding any change in patient status or proposed treatment plan.
  • Provide education to patients, families, and caregivers regarding activity purpose, equipment use, home exercise programs, and activity recommendations.
  • Manage multiple patients at the same time and provide care across multiple clinical settings and locations.
  • Oversee the clinical work of the Rehabilitation Aide.
  • Complete required documentation in a timely, accurate manner and in accordance with professional and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in continuing education and apply new clinical knowledge to practice.
  • Assist with educating and orienting new staff.
  • Serve as a clinical instructor for students and interns, as assigned.
  • Participate as an instructor in established classes or programs.
  • Participate in educational events within the clinic and community.
  • Seek advanced clinical information and attend clinical education coursework that meets Physical Therapy Board of California guidelines.
  • Provide in-services to staff based on advanced clinical education and training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current licensure as a Physical Therapist Assistant in the State of California.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Minimum of 18 months of Physical Therapist Assistant experience in an acute healthcare system environment.

Preferred

  • Previous experience with Microsoft Office and healthcare database systems.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills.

Department-Specific Qualifications

  • Acute Rehabilitation Unit: Demonstrates competency in Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Quality Reporting Program requirements. May require travel to a patient’s home for a home evaluation.
  • Pelvic Health Program: Training or experience completing internal pelvic floor treatment.
  • Rehabilitation Services: Experience with a range of diagnoses, including general medicine, orthopedics, neurology, and cardiopulmonary conditions. Completes mandatory stroke-specific education requirements for certification.
