Position Description

The Professional Surveyor & Metrology Specialist (PSMS) provides professional surveying, dimensional measurement, scanning, reverse engineering, and quality-control support for engineering and manufacturing operations. This position serves as a technical resource for accurate collection, interpretation, and verification of field and manufactured-part dimensional data.

The position combines the responsibilities of a licensed professional surveyor with advanced capabilities in 3D scanning, GPS/GNSS, drone/UAS operation, metrology, reverse engineering, and dimensional quality control.

A Professional Surveyor (PS) license is required. The successful candidate will have a strong desire to learn new equipment, technologies, and software and apply systematic measurement, control, accuracy, and problem-solving principles of surveying to broader metrology applications.

The PSMS applies the principles of professional surveying—including measurement control, coordinate systems, accuracy, data integrity, and systematic field procedures—to advanced dimensional measurement and manufacturing metrology. The position is expected to continuously expand its technical capabilities through the adoption of new equipment, software, and measurement technologies.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Surveying & Geospatial

1. Perform and oversee professional surveying activities in accordance with applicable standards and licensing requirements.
2. Utilize GPS/GNSS equipment, total stations, drones/UAS, and related surveying technologies.
3. Establish and maintain project control, benchmarks, coordinate systems, and survey reference points.
4. Collect, process, and interpret field data for engineering, construction, and manufacturing applications.
5. Prepare and review survey data, point clouds, models, drawings, and related documentation.
6. Report as-built and other verification of jobsite items including anchor bolts, embed, and steel elevations.
7. Develop procedure documentation and resources for quality control of various processes for shop and field activities.

Scanning & Reverse Engineering

1. Perform 3D laser scanning and other dimensional data collection of buildings, structures, equipment, fabricated components, and machined parts.
2. Process point-cloud data and develop accurate CAD models and dimensional documentation.
3. Reverse engineer existing components and assemblies to support design, manufacturing, repair, and replacement.
4. Develop scan-to-CAD and as-built documentation as required.

Metrology & Dimensional Quality Control

1. Perform dimensional inspection and verification of fabricated steel, machined components, assemblies, and other manufactured products.
2. Utilize precision measurement equipment and metrology systems to verify components against engineering drawings, models, specifications, and tolerances.
3. Establish appropriate measurement methods, accuracy requirements, and inspection criteria based on the dimensional requirements of the application.
4. Develop inspection procedures and reports for dimensional quality control.
5. Identify dimensional discrepancies and work with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality personnel to determine appropriate corrective actions.
6. Support first-article, in-process, and final dimensional inspections.

Technical Support

1. Serve as the company's technical resource for surveying, dimensional measurement, scanning, GPS/GNSS, and metrology.
2. Assist Engineering and Manufacturing with difficult-to-measure components, field conditions, and dimensional problems.
3. Maintain calibration and proper operation of surveying and metrology equipment.
4. Establish and maintain procedures for accurate collection, processing, and documentation of dimensional data.
5. Stay current with applicable surveying, metrology, inspection, and technology standards.

POSITION OBJECTIVES

1. Provide professional surveying expertise and maintain responsibility for surveying activities performed under the company's professional surveying practice.
2. Establish and maintain accurate survey, GPS/GNSS, coordinate, and dimensional control for engineering, construction, and manufacturing projects.
3. Expand the company's use of 3D scanning, metrology, drone/UAS, and digital measurement technologies.
4. Provide accurate dimensional data to support engineering, fabrication, machining, installation, and field activities.
5. Develop reliable scan-to-CAD, as-built, and reverse-engineered models from existing structures, equipment, and components.
6. Verify fabricated steel, machined parts, assemblies, and field installations against drawings, models, specifications, and tolerances.
7. Identify and resolve dimensional discrepancies before they affect downstream manufacturing, assembly, or installation.
8. Establish consistent procedures for dimensional inspection, data collection, equipment use, calibration, and documentation.
9. Serve as the company's technical resource for surveying, metrology, dimensional inspection, scanning, and reverse engineering.
10. Improve manufacturing and engineering efficiency by replacing manual measurement and assumptions with accurate, digitally captured dimensional information.
11. Establish reliable and repeatable measurement methods that provide traceable dimensional information for engineering, manufacturing, and quality decisions.

Position Requirements

Required

1. Professional Surveyor (PS) license.
2. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
3. Systematic, process-driven approach to measurement, data collection, analysis, and problem-solving.
4. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, specifications, and dimensional tolerances.
5. Strong communication and documentation skills.
6. Willingness and ability to learn new measurement technologies, equipment, and software.

Preferred

1. Bachelor's degree in surveying, geomatics, engineering, manufacturing technology, or a related technical field preferred.
2. Experience with GPS/GNSS, total stations, 3D laser scanning, point clouds, CAD, and dimensional inspection.
3. Experience with fabricated steel, machining, manufacturing, or industrial construction.
4. Experience with drone/UAS operation and applicable FAA requirements.
