Surgical Technician EL/FP 2026

In the Surgical Technician role, you will serve as a vital member of the surgical team, assisting surgeons during procedures by maintaining a sterile environment and ensuring all instruments and supplies are prepared and available. This position may require flexible scheduling, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and maintain sterile fields, including setting up instruments, equipment, and supplies based on surgical procedures and physician preferences.
• Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, holding retractors, and anticipating surgical needs.
• Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse to ensure patient safety.
• Assist with patient positioning, preparation, draping, and transport to and from the operating room.
• Maintain strict aseptic technique and adhere to all infection control and safety policies.
• Clean, decontaminate, and sterilize surgical instruments and maintain a well-organized, stocked operating environment.

Education, Certification & Experience:

• Completion of a nationally accredited Surgical Technician or Operating Room Technician program preferred (may substitute for entry-level experience).
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in instrument decontamination, sterilization, and surgical tray preparation required for entry level; additional one (1) year of surgical setting experience preferred for full performance level.
• Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic techniques, sterilization procedures, surgical instruments, and operating room protocols.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification required within six (6) months of employment.
• Strong attention to detail, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and effective communication skills.

* Rates listed for paid holidays, vacation and sick days are for 1.0 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) positions assigned to 8 hour shifts. Accruals for these benefits are otherwise prorated based on FTE.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
