SALARY RATE: $59,196.00 (Annual Salary) based on the FTE

JOB DUTIES : This position is located in the Surgery, or Operating/Recovery Room (OR), department of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The HHSC Kaua’i Region encompasses Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical access hospitals (CAH), as well as the Kaua’i Region Clinics and its affiliated entities.

Our Surgery department is dedicated to delivering top-notch nursing services for all surgical procedures, ensuring a sterile and sanitary environment for every operation. We meticulously manage preoperative requirements, guaranteeing that everything is in place for a seamless experience. We pride ourselves on providing the necessary equipment, instruments, and medications, ensuring our providers have everything they need at their fingertips. Additionally, our Recovery Room offers immediate and compassionate postoperative nursing care for all surgical patients, helping them transition smoothly after their procedures.

This position reports to the Registered Professional Nurse V (Unit Nurse Manager), position number 59602, or its designee.

Candidates must be available to work shifts, including weekends and holidays, as required by hospital operations. Our services are available 24/7.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.

PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR THE ENTRY LEVEL:

• EXPERIENCE AND ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: One (1) year of work experience which involved independently decontaminating and sterilizing instruments used in surgical cases; and setting up of instrument trays. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of decontamination and sterilization procedures; aseptic techniques; universal precautions and safety procedures; maintenance and care of equipment; names of surgical equipment; and the ability to assist in the preparation of surgical patients and assist and participate in the activities of the surgical team.

PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR THE FULL PERFORMANCE LEVEL: In addition to the qualifications required at the entry level:

• EXPERIENCE AND ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: One (1) year of work experience in a surgical setting receiving on-the-job training which provided knowledge of surgical procedures and instruments required; and involved applying the knowledge gained by performing as a scrub technician for progressively more complicated surgical procedures. Such experience must also have demonstrated the ability to independently perform as a member of the sterile team which involves preparing patients (i.e., shaving, draping, etc.) and the operating room for procedures.

SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: Graduation from a nationally certified training program for Operating Room Technician, Surgical Technician, or equivalent may be substituted for the experience required for the entry level.

CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Successful completion of a semester of course work in anatomy and physiology, and microbiology from an accredited community college or university.

If you do not submit your request within the twenty (20) days deadline, no Administrative Review will be conducted. Since the Administrative Review is a prerequisite to subsequent steps, failure to utilize this process will make you ineligible for subsequent appeals. The administrative review, formal complaint and/or appeals hearing will not necessarily postpone the recruitment process and/or rescind a selection. If you do not agree with the Administrative Review, you may file a Formal Complaint and then, if you are still not satisfied, you can appeal to the HHSC Merit Appeals Board.
