PAY RATE: $32.46/hr. per Union Contract
POSITION PURPOSE:
Performs the repair, modification and maintenance of communication, information, electronic and complex mechanical devices utilized in transit systems. This is a highly technical level position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs preventive maintenance, installation and adjustment of communications systems consisting of mobile radios, base radios, portable radios, antenna systems and associated equipment.
- Performs preventive maintenance, installation and repair of informational systems consisting of destination signs, run signs, passenger counters, transfer machines and associated equipment.
- Performs preventive maintenance, installation and adjustment of fareboxes.
- Maintains and installs intercommunications, sound, public address and other electronic equipment related to the transit industry.
- Repairs complex electronic equipment to the component level; modifies existing equipment to meet the demands of new applications.
- May participate in the planning and construction of specialized electronic equipment and instruments.
- Assist other technicians in the diagnoses of difficult coach electrical problems.
- Prepares, establishes, and maintains proper files, records and reports.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
- Associate degree in related field or two years of related field experience for each year of college.
- Five years of experience in duties involving the installation, maintenance and care of various types of electronic equipment.
Machines, Tools, & Equipment Used:
- Diagnosis equipment.
- General electronic equipment.
- Computer programs: Word, Excel, e-mail systems feature, etc.
- Office equipment: printer, calculator, fax, copier, telephone mail systems, etc.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Florida Driver's License; must possess or able to obtain a Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class (B) with Passenger (P) endorsement within the first 90 days of employment.
- FCC (Federal Communication Commission) License.
Special Requirement:
- Must meet established test guidelines.
- Inventory of all necessary electronic tools.
- A working home phone number.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Principles and practices of radio and telephone communications, vehicle tracking systems, electronic systems and electrical theory.
- Electrical and electronic systems.
- Working knowledge of installation procedures related to electronic equipment.
- Working knowledge of advanced methods, tools, test equipment and material used in the testing, repair and maintenance of electronic equipment.
- Working knowledge of occupational hazards, precautions and safety requirements of the associated job duties.
- Knowledge of safe operation of transit vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to detect defects in electrical and electronic equipment.
- Ability to read and work from plans and schematics.
- Ability to work independently on electronic projects and repairs.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks and prioritize assignments to meet established deadlines.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to interact with a wide variety of personalities.
- Ability to learn safe operation of transit vehicles and equipment.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
- Constant periods of hearing, near and far acuity, depth perception, color vision and speaking.
- Visual acuity is necessary to perform all duties.
- Frequent periods of walking and sitting.
- Frequent periods of standing and squatting.
- Occasional periods of lifting and carrying supplies and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
- Exposure to extreme noise when interfacing in the shop areas. Decibel range of 85 duration on an occasional level.
- Exposure to mechanical hazards, fumes/odors, paints and chemical hazards in the shop areas.
- Subject to all weather conditions.
