Job Overview

Performs and supervises highly skilled duties involving two or more trades in the construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, equipment, and facilities. Serves as principal crew leader to a building maintenance superintendent in directing general maintenance and repair activities including carpentry, painting, plumbing, welding, roofing, plastering, masonry, and electrical repair on municipal buildings, facilities, and equipment; instructs personnel in use of safe work practices.

Min $41,808.00 annually

Mid $55,400.80 annually

Duties and Responsibilities

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all of the activities described below.

  • Supervises and participates in skilled trades such as the repair and maintenance of plumbing, electric, and water systems and/or fixtures, brick, cement, and carpentry work.
  • Supervises the work of skilled staff by scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, providing training and counseling, and evaluating performance.
  • Schedules and performs preventative maintenance to the facility's building systems and components.
  • Troubleshoots building system related issues.
  • Estimates, plans, executes, and supervises on construction projects.
  • Makes drawings or sketches for repair work.
  • Maintains and tracks inventories valued up to $10,000.00.
  • Keeps daily records and logs on operating conditions and repairs to mechanical equipment using a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • May operate medium to heavy motorized equipment.
  • Operates power equipment to include lathes, drill presses, threading machines, air compressors, drain cleaning/inspection equipment, and gas operated saws.
  • Drives a vehicle to and from work sites.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Specifications

  • Considerable knowledge of procedures and techniques utilized in various construction trades such as commercial plumbing, carpentry, masonry, millwork, roofing, electrical, and general maintenance duties.
  • Considerable knowledge of the construction and maintenance of various types of buildings and facilities.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety procedures and safety equipment.
  • Knowledge of National building Code.
  • Knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Skill in the use of hand and electrical tools and equipment used in building and construction.
  • Skill in the application of supervisory techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Ability to plan, organize, supervise, and evaluate the work/performance of others.
  • Ability document own work and work of others.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical tasks.
  • Ability and willingness to be in an on-call status and respond to call outs, working non-standard duty hours and rotating shifts that include nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to operate basic computer functions (email, digital timecard, data entry, and others.).
  • Ability to coordinate contracted work.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate a standard motor vehicle safely.

Physical Requirements

  • Required to work outside in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces, on ladders, scaffolding, towers and lift buckets up to a considerable height.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, lifting, dragging, and pushing.
  • Required to lift up to 50 lbs. and climb up to 35 Feet.

Work Category

Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND
  • Four years of experience as a skilled trades worker in two or more of the following trades: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, painting, or other skilled trades; AND
  • One year of crew leader experience; OR
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate; AND
  • Successful completion of a skilled trades program from a vocational/technical school; AND
  • One year of experience at the Multi-Trades Worker II level; AND
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.

Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department, the County's Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.

  • Maintain the ability to pass the background checks required for the position. These background checks may include but are not limited to:
  • Criminal History Background Check using Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS)
  • Level 1 and Level 2 Background screening (Ch. 435 Florida Statutes)
  • Child Abuse, Abandonment and Neglect Record Check using the State Automated Child Welfare Information System (SACWIS)
  • Sex Offender and Sexual Predator record check using the list maintained by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)
  • Possess the necessary job-related license(s) or certification(s) that may include possession of a Florida Driver License (Class E) or an applicable Commercial Driver License (CDL).

Salary : $41,808 - $55,401
