What are the responsibilities and job description for the Anatomic Pathology Technician/Special Procedures Assistant position at Highlands Pathology Consultants, P.C.?
Highlands Pathology Consultants is seeking a qualified individual to join our team in the surgical pathology gross room, located inside Ballad Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, TN. The position is full time, Monday – Friday, 7 am-3:30 pm, with some flexibility required.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Intake, evaluation, and data entry of surgical specimen cases, to include patient demographics, insurance confirmation, client information, specimen descriptions, and histology protocols.
- Utilization of laboratory chemicals and reagents for tissue fixation, processing, and staining protocols.
- General lab upkeep to include keeping temperature logs and routine equipment maintenance records, supply management/restocking, organization, and cleaning.
- Assistance to pathologists/PA’s during specimen examination and intraoperative procedures such as frozen section analysis.
- Assistance to the pathologists in the OR setting for specimen collection procedures such as bone marrow biopsies, with strict compliance to sterile field procedures.
- Processing, packaging, and distribution of special procedure specimens for clinical and reference laboratory testing.
- Navigation of electronic medical records systems.
- Guidance of and communication with clients, physicians, and other medical staff regarding specimen collection, handling, and delivery requirements.
- Protection of patient confidentiality and understanding of HIPAA privacy laws.
- Gross examination, dissection, and submission of smaller/routine surgical specimens (dependent on educational background and past training, subject to progress evaluation).

- Strong attention to detail and ability to use objective judgement when assessing specimen/patient demographics and incoming communication.
- Ability to maintain focus and prioritize tasks in a busy environment.
- Most preferable: Familiarity with medical and anatomic terminology and/or medical laboratory experience.
- Preferable: A degree or previous education hours in a biological science or medical field.
