Director of Children and Family Ministries

Position Summary:

• Create and implement children and family ministry programs that provide a welcoming, safe, and engaging environment where children and families can grow in their faith in Jesus Christ.
• Working collaboratively with the Associate Pastor of Congregational Care, the Director of Children and Families will oversee Sunday morning children’s programming, coordinate volunteers, support our weekly outreach volunteers for Gym Jam, administer curriculum, and help lead key seasonal and outreach events throughout the year.

Responsibilities:

Sunday Morning Children’s Ministry (35%)

• Administer and oversee weekly Sunday School programming.
• Recruit, train, schedule, and support volunteer teachers and helpers.
• Ensure classrooms are prepared with materials and supplies.
• Maintain a welcoming, safe, and well-organized Sunday morning environment.
• Be present at church each Sunday morning to lead and coordinate programming.

Curriculum Coordination & Faith Formation (15%)

• Work collaboratively with the Associate Pastor of Congregational Care to select and evaluate curriculum.
• Prepare/coordinate and distribute weekly teaching materials to volunteers.
• Adapt curriculum as needed to meet the needs of Highland’s children and youth for our Sunday school program.
• Provide annual orientation and provide regular support to teachers.

Volunteer Leadership & Development (10%)

• Build relationships with volunteers.
• Maintain volunteer schedules and communication.
• Offer support, appreciation, and encouragement.
• Participate in required child safety and background check processes.

Outreach & Special Events (20%)

Coordinate and support several annual family-focused events, including but not limited to:

• Trunk-or-Treat
• Easter Egg Hunt
• Fall Kickoff Event
• Christmas Eve Family Service with the Associate Pastor of Congregational Care
• Vacation Bible School (or similar summer program)

Responsibilities include volunteer coordination, supply preparation, communication with committee volunteers, and day-of event leadership.

Wednesday Morning Gym Program (5%)

• Oversee and support the weekly Wednesday morning Gym Jam program.
• Coordinate volunteers and ensure materials are prepared.
• Help create a welcoming environment for families.
• Be present for two Wednesday mornings a month to ensure volunteers feel supported, and community feels connected to Highland.

Worship Engagement & Family Integration (5%)

• Maintain and restock worship bags for children.
• Support opportunities for children to participate in worship when appropriate.
• Encourage intergenerational engagement within the congregation.

Meetings & Communication (10%)

• Attend weekly staff meeting (Tuesday).
• Meet regularly (weekly or bi-weekly) with the Associate Pastor of Congregational Care.
• Attend Children, Youth & Family Committee meetings (every other month).
• Participate in regular Discipleship Committee meetings to help strengthen and connect faith formation across generations.
• Maintain regular communication with families through weekly email and church systems.
• Help at times with administrative tasks for Youth Ministry when needed

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Prior experience in children or youth ministry or an educational field required.
• A growing Christian faith and alignment with the mission of Highland Presbyterian Church (PCUSA).
• Experience working with children and/or families in ministry or educational settings.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to recruit, empower, and encourage volunteers.
• Safe Church clearances required (or willingness to obtain).

Work Schedule & Flexibility

This is a 30-hour per week position with flexible working arrangements.

• Sunday mornings are required.
• Tuesday staff meetings are required.
• Additional hours may be scheduled flexibly throughout the week in coordination with the Associate Pastor of Congregational Care.
• Some evenings and seasonal events required.
• CYF and Discipleship Meetings when offered
• 2x monthly Wednesday morning Gym Jam

Pay: $35,000.00 - $40,000.00 per year
