Position Summary: The Lead Mentor at Higher Ground Youth & Family Services plays a crucial role in guiding and supporting youth from underserved communities. This individual fosters positive relationships with elementary and middle school students, promoting educational engagement, interpersonal skills, and personal growth through structured activities. The Lead Mentor serves as the point person for their assigned age group, helping coordinate programming and support among mentors. They also provide informal leadership by guiding the Assistant Lead Mentor and Youth Mentor interns, offering advice, delegating tasks, and helping ensure consistency in daily routines and program expectations. Strong classroom management, organizational, communication, leadership, and creative engagement skills are essential for success in this role.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Responsibilities
- Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating appropriate behavior and setting clear boundaries.
- Empower youth by helping them develop problem-solving strategies and conflict resolution skills.
- Facilitate structured activities, including academic support, arts, digital media, sports, and life skills development.
- Supervise and engage youth in both indoor and outdoor settings, ensuring safety and active participation.
- Organize and prepare program spaces, ensuring all materials and equipment are in place.
- Act as the lead mentor for their assigned age group, delegating tasks and offering guidance to the Assistant Lead Mentor and Youth Mentor interns.
- Provide informal support and mentorship to interns and peers, fostering collaboration and alignment with program expectations.
- Act as a liaison between assigned groups and office staff, communicating needs and concerns effectively.
- Participate in staff meetings, contributing to discussions on program improvements and youth development strategies.
- Enforce program policies and procedures, assisting with behavior management as needed.
- Promote and uphold Higher Ground Staff Essentials in all activities.
- Assist with basic program logistics, including setup and breakdown of equipment and field maintenance.
- Additional assignments based on organizational needs
Qualifications
Qualifications & Requirements
- Strong oral communication skills and ability to engage effectively with youth.
- Experience working with children 7-17 is preferred.
- Passion for youth mentorship and a commitment to creating positive experiences.
- Experience guiding peers or interns in a team or program setting is highly valued.
- Ability to plan, organize, and implement activities in a group setting.
- Strong classroom management, organization, and leadership skills.
- Capacity to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently when needed.
- Ability to lift and carry supplies or equipment up to 40 lbs.
- Must be able to travel to other locations and grades as needed for programming
Salary : $18 - $21
