The Business Process Specialist (TOC Focus) analyzes, designs, and optimizes business processes using the principles of the Theory of Constraints to improve throughput, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance overall organizational performance. This role works cross-functionally to identify system constraints, develop targeted improvement solutions, and support continuous improvement initiatives that increase flow and operational efficiency.

Theory of Constraints–Based Process Improvement

  • Identify system constraints (bottlenecks) across workflows, departments, or value streams.
  • Conduct TOC analyses such as constraint identification, exploitation strategies, and subordinate process adjustments.
  • Develop and implement improvement plans to elevate or eliminate constraints.
  • Monitor throughput improvements and evaluate impact on system performance.
  • Apply TOC tools such as the Five Focusing Steps, Throughput Accounting, and Drum-Buffer-Rope when appropriate.

Process Analysis & Improvement

  • Map, analyze, and optimize end-to-end business processes with a focus on flow efficiency.
  • Use data and workflow insights to identify inefficiencies beyond constraints (waste, delays, and rework).
  • Conduct root cause analysis and propose solutions aligned with continuous improvement and TOC principles.
  • Evaluate process changes using throughput-oriented metrics rather than traditional cost-based measures.
  • Identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas for improvement.
  • Propose and implement process optimization strategies to enhance performance and quality through company education and training.
  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses to support process change recommendations.
  • Takes direction from COO by removing barriers to provide world class customer experience.

Process Design & Documentation

  • Create clear process maps, SOPs, and workflow documents highlighting constraint-management strategies.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of constraints, buffer sizes, performance indicators, and TOC decision logic.
  • Develop dashboards and KPIs that track flow, throughput, buffer status, and constraint utilization.
  • Own placement of cross-functional process, procedure and standards documentation.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with operations, IT, finance, HR, and other departments to gather requirements and ensure process alignment.
  • Facilitate TOC workshops, training sessions, focused meetings and improvement sessions and meetings to support process rollouts and change management.
  • Support project teams in translating TOC insights into operational and system requirements.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure processes adhere to internal controls, regulatory standards, and industry best practices.
  • Monitor process performance and recommend corrective actions as needed.
  • Support audit processes with required documentation and process insights.

 

Training, Coaching & Internal Education

  • Design and deliver TOC-based training programs for employees at all levels, including workshops, e-learning modules, and hands-on coaching, working closely with HPN Internal Training Manager.
  • Create internal content such as job aids, process documentation, toolkits, and case studies to reinforce learning.
  • Build and maintain a company-wide learning framework for TOC, continuous improvement, and flow optimization.
  • Coach managers and teams in applying TOC principles to daily work, project prioritization, and decision-making.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND/OR ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management, Operations, or related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in business process improvement, operations, business optimization or a related role.
  • Experience with Theory of Constraints, Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies preferred.
  • Certification in any of the following:
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • Theory of Constraints (ToC)
  • Lean
  • Six Sigma

Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in process modeling tools (Visio, Lucidchart, BPMN tools).
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and documentation abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and performance measurement.
  • Familiarity with ERP/CRM systems is a plus.
