Classic Auto Body & Metal Fabrication Technician
About Us
High Desert Works is home to High Desert Scouts, a Grand Junction-based restoration and repair shop specializing in International Scout vehicles, other classic vehicles, and diesel truck mechanics. We take pride in doing things right — combining old-school craftsmanship with modern shop standards to bring vintage vehicles back to life. Our reputation is built on quality metalwork, attention to detail, and respect for the history of the vehicles we restore.
Position Summary
We're looking for an experienced Auto Body & Metal Fabrication Technician to join our growing team. This role is central to our restoration work, focused on structural and cosmetic bodywork for classic and vintage vehicles — particularly International Scouts and other older trucks and SUVs. The ideal candidate has strong hands-on metalworking skills and takes genuine pride in restoring vehicles to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair rust, corrosion, and structural damage on classic vehicle bodies and frames
- Perform metal fabrication, including patch panel fitting, custom panel forming, and floor pan/rocker replacement
- Cut, weld (MIG/TIG), grind, and shape sheet metal to factory or custom specifications
- Perform dent repair, panel alignment, and body filler application
- Strip, prep, and prime surfaces for paint work
- Disassemble and reassemble body components, trim, and hardware during restoration projects
- Fabricate replacement parts when OEM parts are unavailable or discontinued
- Work closely with the shop team to prioritize project timelines and maintain restoration quality standards
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
- Communicate progress and technical findings clearly with shop management and, when needed, customers
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Proven experience in auto body repair and metal fabrication (classic/vintage vehicle experience strongly preferred)
- Proficiency in MIG and/or TIG welding on thin-gauge sheet metal
- Skilled in metal shaping techniques (English wheel, shrinker/stretcher, hammer & dolly work)
- Strong understanding of body alignment, panel fitment, and rust repair methods
- Ability to read and interpret body damage and develop appropriate repair plans
- Experience with body filler, primers, and surface prep for paint
- Own hand tools (shop provides specialty and heavy equipment)
- Valid driver's license
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently as well as part of a small team
Preferred (Not Required)
- Direct experience with International Scout or similar vintage 4x4/truck platforms
- Frame-off restoration experience
- Fabrication of trim, brackets, or small custom parts
- Familiarity with shop management software (we use ShopMonkey)
