What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer II position at Hex, Inc.?
Hex is building the infrastructure for on-demand aerial data. We design and manufacture drone-in-a-box systems that automate repetitive drone operations, taking humans out of the loop so the people who depend on aerial data can move faster. We're a small, agile team, we move fast, take on extreme ownership, and build products in months, not years.
As a Mechanical Engineer on the Hardware team at Hex, you’ll own critical parts of the large mechanical assemblies that make our dock products work, from actuators and pressure-formed enclosures to production readiness. You’ll design, prototype, and test complex mechanical components, drive DFA and DFM decisions, and ship hardware that operates unattended in the field. Most of our design work lives in Fusion 360.
The ideal candidate has operated in a high-tech, fast-paced environment, is comfortable driving across multiple stakeholders, and has a strong background in design, testing, validation, and scaling hardware to production
- Own critical mechanical subsystems on Hex’s new dock product. Including actuators, large enclosures, and actuator driven assemblies
- Design mechanical parts and assemblies in 3D CAD that meet structural, durability, manufacturability, and industrial design requirements
- Drive design-for-assembly and design-for-manufacturing decisions on large mechanical parts produced via pressure forming, thermoforming, sheet metal, and injection molding
- Develop and present multiple design solutions for novel challenges, articulating tradeoffs clearly to cross-functional teammates and documenting the design process thoroughly
- Plan and execute verification and validation tests, leveraging DOE methodologies to deliver actionable insights on quality, performance, and manufacturability
- Perform thorough root cause analyses to identify and resolve issues in the field and on the production floor
- Collaborate with senior engineers to evaluate new technologies, materials, and manufacturing methods
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 2 - 5 years of experience designing complex mechanical products. Ideally in robotics, industrial systems, consumer electronics, or aerospace
- Strong proficiency with CAD software such as Fusion 360
- Experience designing and manufacturing large mechanical parts: pressure forming, thermoforming, sheet metal, and/or injection molding
- Hands-on experience with actuator selection and integration in real mechanical systems
- Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping tools to build proof-of-concept models
- Experience bringing a hardware product to market
- Thermal analysis experience: CFD, FEA thermal, or hands-on thermal characterization of battery systems, electronics, or HVAC
- Experience with cooling design and thermal management
- Supported a product at large scale manufacturing
- Working experience in a fast-paced or startup environment
- Passion for robotics, autonomy, or aerial systems
- Experience leading or working on an engineering competition team, i.e. Formula SAE, Baja SAE, RoboSub, Combat Robotics or similar
This role is based in person at Hex’s Miami, FL headquarters. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary.
Hex is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We encourage anyone who is interested in this role to apply, even if you don’t meet every qualification.
