JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Band Director
Reports To: Principal
SUMMARY: The band director is responsible for training students to be part of the band. Specifically, the band director will lead lessons and grade level full band classes, prepare students for band competitions/concerns, and supervise said competitions. In addition, the band director will need to communicate effectively with students, parents, other bands, and officials.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
- Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written skills.
- Demonstrates understanding, knowledge, and skill for each instrument represented in the band.
- Enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner.
- Demonstrate the ability to deal with sensitive issues in a tactful and professional manner.
- Address concerns and offer suggestions in an appropriate and confidential manner.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and pupils.
- Ability to communicate with students, parents, and staff in an acceptable/courteous manner.
DUTIES
- Holds individual or small group lessons daily
- Direct full band class
- Marching Band
- Attend community parades
- Attend band camp
- Host weekly rehearsals during the marching season
- Attend all home football games and perform during halftime
- Attend all marching band performances and competitions
- Pep Band
- Find and rehearse selections for the group
- Attend some boys and girls basketball games
- Concert Band
- Find and rehearse for multiple concerts per year
- Attend Sold an Ensemble contest
- Attend ICE Conference competitions
- Jazz Band
- Select, rehears, and conduct
- Direct Combo, select music and rehearse
- Organize and hold multiple concerts per year.
- Work to improve the level and ability of each student.
- Report bus lists and sign out sheets to the office for away competitions.
- Stay abreast of new rules and regulations for band competitions.
- Organize and hold practices outside of school hours for Jazz Band.
- Organizes and communicates desired supply order to the Principal each winter.
- Supervises students during practices, events and competitions and until all students have left the facilities.
- Positively motivate, communicate, and interact with student participants.
- Positively communicate and interact with parents, officials, and others.
- Maintains a variety of documents including records for both practices and competitions.
- Maintains an accurate and up to date gradebook.
- Makes appropriate travel arrangements and communicates with families regarding competitions or other events in a timely manner.
- Plans activities to meet the needs, skills, and interests of students involved.
- Use appropriate channels to resolve concerns, conflicts, and issues.
- Conduct practices and competitions with a high level of sportsmanship and ethics. Profanity is not to be used by teachers or students.
- Work with other directors in the music department district wide.
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned by the Administration.
