What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Product Design Engineer position at Hercules Chassis?
Lead the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of flatbed, and drop deck/lowboy; as well as assist with other specialty trailer products. Responsible for delivering innovative, manufacturable, and cost-effective engineering solutions that meet customer requirements, regulatory standards, quality expectations, and business objectives.
Provide technical leadership throughout the product development lifecycle, including concept development, structural design, component integration, prototype evaluation, testing, validation, and production launch. Partner closely with manufacturing, sourcing, suppliers, sales, operations, and customers to optimize product performance, manufacturability, reliability, and total cost of ownership.
Serve as a subject matter expert for trailer systems, structural design, fabrication methods, materials, and industry regulations, while driving product innovation, continuous improvement initiatives, and intellectual property development.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the design and development of new trailer products and product enhancements, including flatbeds, drop deck/lowboy trailers, and related equipment, ensuring compliance with customer requirements, safety regulations, industry standards, and company objectives.
- Perform engineering studies, calculations, and design analyses to validate structural integrity, durability, manufacturability, performance, reliability, and cost targets throughout the product development process.
- Develop and review engineering documentation, including CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), design standards, test plans, and technical reports.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering team members and cross-functional stakeholders regarding product design, manufacturing processes, materials selection, fabrication methods, and engineering best practices.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, operations, and supplier partners to resolve design and production issues, improve manufacturability, reduce costs, and support successful product launches and ongoing production activities.
- Lead product improvement and value engineering initiatives focused on increasing product quality, durability, safety, productivity, and customer satisfaction while reducing material and manufacturing costs.
- Evaluate and approve supplier-proposed solutions, materials, components, and manufacturing processes to ensure technical compliance, commercial viability, and alignment with product requirements.
- Plan, coordinate, and support prototype builds, validation testing, and field evaluations, analyzing results and implementing corrective actions as necessary to achieve product performance objectives.
- Participate in customer meetings, dealer visits, field investigations, and technical reviews to gather product requirements, address customer concerns, identify market needs, and develop engineering solutions.
- Monitor and analyze engineering performance metrics, project milestones, validation results, warranty trends, and field performance data to drive continuous improvement efforts.
- Lead cross-functional project activities, ensuring alignment of schedules, deliverables, resources, risk mitigation plans, and business objectives throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Support the development and protection of intellectual property, including invention disclosures, patent applications, technical documentation, and competitive product analyses.
- Research and implement innovative technologies, materials, and design methodologies that improve product competitiveness, enhance customer value, and support long-term strategic initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and industry standards, including DOT, FMCSA, SAE, and other relevant trailer and transportation regulations.
- Serve as the technical subject matter expert for flatbed and drop deck/lowboy trailer products, providing guidance on structural design, load securement considerations, trailer configurations, suspension systems, and customer application requirements.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience (in the field):
Minimum 2 year degree in Mechanical Engineering and 5 years. or related field or equivalent experience required (10 years)
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in design software - required, Auto CAD/NX- preferred.
Experience in metal fabrication- preferred
Experience manufacturing environment- preferred
